Lewis Women’s Tennis Sage Hills Wins B Draw Consolation Final At ITA Midwest Regionals

Freshman Nefeli Zafeiri advanced to semifinals of A Draw.

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's tennis had a strong showing at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regionals the past three days (Sept. 18-20) in Indianapolis, Ind. The Flyers won 13 of 19 matches in the singles competition over the course of the tournament.

Freshman Sage Hills (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) lost her opening match in the "B" Draw to Chiara Wolff 3-6, 6-2, 6-10 before battling back in the "B" Draw consolation bracket to win three straight matches. She advanced with a three-set win over Courtney Rittel (6-4, 4-6, 10-4), then had a bye into the quarterfinals where she defeated Danica Malan in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 to move into the semifinals. Hills advanced to the consolation final by injury default against Carolina Velazquez and then in the final knocked off Nicole Johnson 6-0, 7-6 (7-1).

Freshman Nefeli Zafeiri (Greece) won her first four matches and advanced all the way to the semifinal round of the "A" Draw. She opened with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Luciana Pereyra in the round of 64. In the second round she defeated Sienna Lopez in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. In her third round match she knocked off Vera Griva 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 and then in the quarterfinals she rallied for a three set win over Mariia Solnyshkina 1-6, 7-5, 10-8. Zafeiri lost her semifinal match to Anna Novikova 6-4, 6-3.

Junior Jovana Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) defeated Willemien Coetzee 6-0, 6-2 in her opening round match of the "A" Draw before falling to Novikova 6-1, 6-0 in the round of 32.

Sophomore Casey Smith (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) won her opening match in the "A" Draw over Kseniia Eremina 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 but had to retire due to injury in her second round match against Zuzanna Krygier.

Senior Anastasiya Salenko (Kyiv, Ukraine) won her first two matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the round of 16. She knocked of Lidia Laskova in her first match 6-3, 6-2 and followed that with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Elizaveta Velichko in the round of 32 before falling to Diana Cabrera 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 16.

Senior Joie Reisch (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township), competing in the "B" Draw defeated Reagan Resor in her first round match 6-1, 6-4 but had to withdraw due to injury against Meadeline Whip in her next match.

In doubles action, Hills and Grace Sueflohn (Delafield, Wis./KM Global Charter School) went 0-2 in the Double "A" Draws. The duo lost its first round match 8-5 and then lost its first match in the consolation bracket 8-3.

Salenko and Smith won its first round match in the Doubles "A" Draws with an 8-4 win but lost in its second round match 8-3.

Reisch and Zafeiri lost in its first round match in the Doubles "A" Draws 9-7 and then dropped its first match in the consolation bracket 8-1.

The Flyers return to the courts on Friday (Oct. 8) when they travel to Whitewater, Wis., for the Warhawk Women's Fall Invite.
