EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Lewis University's men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Southern Indiana at Strassweg Field in Evansville, Ind. The Flyers fall to 4-2-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the GLVC while the Screaming Eagles improve to 2-4, 1-3 GLVC.
Lewis jumped on the board first with a goal from
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) in the 10th minute. It was Mwanga's third goal of the season assisted by
Nathaniel Campbell (Palm Bay, Fla./Heritage) and
Aris Oluwatuyi (Lagos, Nigeria/The International Sports Academy).
The Flyers had several chances in the next 20 minutes to extend the lead taking seven shots but put only one of those on goal and that was
Godwin Asore's (Kumasi, Ghana/Putnam Science Academy) shot in the 23rd minute.
USI got the equalizer with less than seven minutes remaining in the first half.
Sebastian Doppelhofer (Liebmannweg, Austria/Kapfenburg) stopped the initial chance by Zach Barton but Graham Miller scored on a second chance for his second goal of the season. Barton and Marky Lara were credited with assists on the goal.
Each team had nine shots in the first 45 minutes but the Screaming Eagles put six of theirs on goal forcing Doppelhofer to make five saves while Lewis had just two on goal.
The Flyers came out flying to start the second half looking for the go-ahead goal and ahead several chances taking five shots and putting three of those on goal in the first 13 minutes of the stanza.
USI scored the go-ahead goal in the 59th as Barton scored his first of the season with assists from Brian Winkler and Tanner Tichenor.
Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) had two chances to even the match but his first shot in the 65th minute was blocked and his follow up attempt was saved.
Lewis had one more chance at the equalizer in the 68th minute but
Arturs Gorodnickis' (Riga, Latvia/Riga) shot missed wide.
The Flyers outshot the Screaming Eagles 8-7 in the second half but USI put five shots on goal to four for Lewis.
The Flyers outshot the Screaming Eagles 17-16 in the contest but USI had the advantage in shots on goal with 11 to six for Lewis. The Flyers also had a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
Doppelhofer made a career-high nine saves in the contest.
Lewis concludes its three-match road trip traveling to Springfield, Ill., to take on Illinois Springfield on Friday (Oct. 1) at 7:30 p.m.
