ALLENDALE, Mich. – Lewis University's men's tennis team concluded play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regionals on Saturday (Sept. 25) hosted by Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich.
The Flyers qualified three players in the main draw in the 64-player bracket out of more than 175 total participants from the 22 schools competing.
Oskar Lusti (Tallinn, Estonia/) won his first round match defeating Quincy's Samuele Contestabile in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. Lusti was defeated in the second round by Ferris State's Yannic Alexander Mader in a hard fought three-set match 4-6, 6-3, 8-10.
Juan Martin Ramirez Mejia (Medellin, Colombia/) dropped his opening round match to Findlay's Luigi Bove 6-1, 6-2 but bounced back to defeat Hillsdale's Tyler Conrad in the consolation bracket 2-6, 6-3, 10-8. He was eliminated in the next round dropping a three-set match to McKendree's Nanase Ebisu 6-4, 2-6, 5-10.
Pedja Trifunovic (Aleksandrovac, Serbia/) lost in his opening round match to Davenport's Juan-Louis van Antwerpen in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Trifunovic then defeated Northwood's Tony Henrio 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 10-2 in his first match in the consolation bracket and then fell to Ashland's Stuart Brdicka 6-0, 6-2 in his second consolation match.
In the B Draw,
Oliwer Wierzbicki (Szczecin, Poland) lost his first round match to Southern Indiana's Quinten Gillespie 4-6, 6-1, 5-10 and then in the consolation bracket lost to Wayne State's David Pluszczyk 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles action, Ramirez Mejia and Lusti lost to Ferris State's Mader and Benjamin Lortie in the first round 8-3 of the main draw and then were defeated by Drury's Andrin Saner and Marlon Wilken 8-5 in the consolation bracket
Trifunovic and Wierzbicki defeated Cedarville's Dawson Poling and Nathan Brumbaugh 8-4 in the first round of the Doubles "B" Draw and then were defeated by Findlay's Wilfredo Lara and Alfredo Berlanga 8-5 in the second round.
Lewis wraps up its final season next weekend at the Eastern Illinois Fall Invite (Oct. 1-2) in Charleston, Ill.
