INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis University's men's basketball team rallied from a 13-point deficit to defeat Indianapolis 70-69 for its sixth straight win on Thursday evening at Nicoson Hall in Indianapolis. The Flyers improve to 6-5, 4-0 GLVC while the Greyhounds drop to 10-5, 4-3 GLVC.
UIndy came out of the gates on fire knocking down six of their first seven shots including three three's to race out to a 13-2 lead. Lewis began to chip away at the lead and got it to eight on a layup from Deon
Ejim with 12:56 left in the opening half but the Hounds countered with five straight points to grab a 13-point advantage two minutes later.
The Flyers punched back with nine straight points including five from
Connor Niego (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) to cut the Indy lead to four with less than seven minutes remaining in the stanza.
The lead continued to hover around four until the final two minutes of the half when the Greyhounds scored the final five points to take a nine-point lead into the intermission.
UIndy opened the second half scoring eight of the first 12 points to extend its lead back to 13 on a jumper from Cory Miller Jr.
Lewis chipped away at the lead getting it to four near the midway point of the frame on a three-pointer from
Atakan Sahinkaya (Istanbul, Turkey/Perkiomen School).
The Hounds pushed their lead back to nine thanks to a 7-2 run over the next four minutes but would go cold from the floor over the final six minutes as they were held to just four points for 5:30.
The Flyers took advantage going on an 11-0 run to take its first lead of the game at 63-61 when
Dre Bell (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge) hit two-of-three free throws at the 3:31 mark.
The two sides swapped the next four points before
Anthony Sayles Jr. (Evanston, Ill./Notre Dame College Prep) hit a three from the left corner with 2:21 to play to put Lewis in front 68-65.
Miller Jr. hit a jumper in the paint with 0:40 left to make it a one-point game but Bell answered on the other end hitting a jumper in the lane with 0:14 remaining to put the Flyers back up by three.
Miller Jr. was fouled with 6.7 to play and hit both free throws to cut the margin to one. UIndy applied full court pressure, forced a turnover with 0:05 left under Lewis' basket and had a chance to win the game but Dee Montgomery was called for a double dribble with 1.8 left to give the ball back to the Flyers.
Lewis inbounded the ball to Bell in the front court and he was able to dribble out the clock to secure the victory.
The Flyers finished the game shooting 47.3 percent (26-for-55) from the floor including 8-of-18 from three and shot 83 percent at the foul line. Lewis forced 12 turnovers and turned those into 21 points.
Niego led the Flyers with 12 points while Sayles Jr. and
Beau Frericks (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) added 11 points apiece off the bench.
The Greyhounds shot 44.6 percent (25-for-56), were 12-of-30 from three and shot only 54 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded Lewis 35-27 in the contest.
Miller Jr. led all scorers with 29 points and was joined in double figures by Jesse Bingham with 13 points.
The Flyers continue their three-game road trip on Saturday against Southern Indiana at 3:15 p.m. in Evansville, Ind.
