Story Links

INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis University's women's basketball team struggled offensively in its 69-56 loss at Indianapolis on Thursday evening. The Flyers fall to 4-10, 2-4 GLVC while the Greyhounds improve to 5-10, 2-5 GLVC.

Lewis fell behind 14-2 to begin the contest as UIndy came out hot knocking down their first four shots, all from beyond the arc, to build its largest lead of the half. Kae Barth-Lofton (St. Paul, Minn./Maranatha Christian Academy) hit a three midway through the opening frame for the Flyers field goal of the contest sparking an 8-0 run that saw them cut the deficit to four.

The Hounds extended their lead back to six late in the quarter on a putback from Liz Alsot but Barth-Lofton hit a jumper at the end of the quarter to keep the margin at four heading into the second quarter.

Both teams struggled to shoot the ball in the second quarter as they combined to make only three field goals in 23 attempts. UIndy led by three after a pair of free throws from Shira Sasson before Lewis closed the half on an 8-0 run to take a 25-20 lead into the intermission.

Taylor Gugliuzza (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) led all scorers with seven points in the first 20 minutes while Kathryn Schmidt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central) and Barth-Lofton added six and five points respectively.

Lewis extended its lead to eight early in the third quarter on a three-pointer from Schmidt but the Greyhounds countered with a 14-2 run to regain the lead on a jumper from Sadie Hill. The Flyers retook the lead on a layup from Amelia Motz (Canton, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) but that would be their final lead of the contest as UIndy outscored Lewis 9-2 over the final four minutes to take a six-point lead into the final quarter.

The Flyers offensive struggles continued into the fourth quarter as they missed their first seven shots and four free throws which allowed the Greyhounds to extend their run with 14 straight points to increase the lead to 57-37

Lewis made a late run cutting the UIndy lead to 11 but that would be the closest they got as the Hounds were perfect from the foul line down the stretch to seal the win.

The Flyers shot a season-low 30.5 percent from the floor including 6-of-20 from three and only 61 percent at the foul line. Schmidt led Lewis with 13 points while Gugliuzza and Motz finished with 10 points apiece.

UIndy missed only six shots in the second half shooting 75 percent (18-for-24) to finish the contest at 50 percent (23-of-46) from the field, were 8-for-22 from downtown and went 15-of-15 at the foul line. Elana Wells led all scorers with 17 points while Mickey Sasson and Hill added 13 and 10 points respectively.

The Flyers continue their three-game road trip on Saturday against 25th ranked Southern Indiana at 1 p.m. in Evansville, Ind.
