WHITEWATER, Wis. -- The Lewis University women's tennis team competed at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater WarHawk Fall Invitational this weekend with three players winning championships in their draws in singles competition.
SINGLES RESULTS
Anastasiya Salenko (Kyiv, Ukraine/Louisiana Tech) won her championship draw after winning three matches in a row. Salenko first defeated Cardinal Stritch's Emerson Banning, 6-0, 6-1; she then prevailed over Wisconsin-Whitewater's Gianni Nikoleit, 6-0, 6-2. In the championship match, Salenko defeated Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Stejskalova, 6-1, 6-0.
Anabel Aguilar-Ramirez (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/South Carolina State) also won the championship in her draw by winning three straight matches. In her first match, Ramirez defeated St. Francis's Kiana Kikich, 6-1, 6-0.
Ramirez went on to defeat Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Gieorgia Cavestro in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. In the championship match, Ramirez defeated Cardinal Stritch's Grube Anderson in a three-set thriller, 5-7, 6-1, 10-6.
Jovana Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) was able to capture her championship in her draw after picking up a pair of victories. Vujanic defeated Whitewater's Courtney Day, 7-6 (3), 6-3. Vujanic then defeated Aspasia Katsouda Taka from Cardinal Stritch in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
Sage Hills (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) made it to the second round after defeating Sara Simonova of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 6-3, 1-0. Hills suffered a setback against Wisconsin-Whitewater's Cassie Lee, 6-4, 6-2.
Benedetta Luccone (Roccagorga, Italy) also advanced to the second round after taking down St. Francis's Denisse Lizano in a three-set tiebreaker, 3-6, 7-5, 10-3. Lucone was eliminated by Alice Shields of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 6-4, 6-2.
Casey Smith (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) suffered a setback against Wisconsin Milwaukee's Iva Stejskalova in a three-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 1-6, 10-6.
DOUBLES RESULTS
Smith/Salenko went all the way to the championship and won after defeating Simanova/Shields, 7-5. The duo then went on to defeat Angelica Ross and McKenna Chudy of Northern Illinois, 6-1. They then went on to win the championship match 6-4.
Ramirez/Lucone also saw success in doubles competition as the duo won their championship draw. The duo defeated Whitewater's Bethany Marshall and Gracie Ha in the first round, 6-4. Ramirez and Lucone then defeated Kissmel Cedano and Ana Alverez, 6-0. In the championship match, the duo won against Milwaukee's Anika Tylek and Cavestro, 6-3.
Vujanic/Hills made it all the way to the championship but fell in that match. The duo first defeated St. Francis's Grace Monahan and Heather Heintz, 6-1 then went on to win against MacKenzie Lindow and Molly Asfeld, 6-3. Lewis's duo then lost the championship to NIU's Jenna Horne and Josefina Trella, 6-4.
