Flyers Come Up Short In 95-83 Overtime Loss to Michigan Tech

LIBERTY, Mo. – Lewis University's women's basketball team fell to Michigan Tech 95-83 at the SDC Gymnasium Saturday afternoon (Nov. 12) in Liberty, Missouri. Kathryn Schmidt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central) banked in a 3-pointer to tie the game at the end of regulation but the Flyers were unable to come away with the victory in the overtime loss.

SUMMARY
To start the game, Lewis missed three of its first six shots and committed three turnovers in the first six minutes of the contest. Three 3-pointers from Michigan Tech created some cushion and gave the Huskies an early 10-point lead. A layup by Michigan Tech made it Huskies a 22-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Flyers began the second quarter on a 9-0 run, capped with back-to-back layups from Schmidt and Gugliuzza. Lewis and MTU traded baskets throughout the final seven minutes of the second quarter, Lewis' first quarter deficit of 13 was cut to four.

Lewis finished the first half shooting 45.5 percent (15-for-33) from the field, were 3-of-6 from three. Michigan Tech shot 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from the floor in the first half and the Huskies were 9-of-16 (56.3 percent) from three. 

As the second half took place, Lewis outscored Michigan Tech 11-7 in the first four and a half minutes to tie the game at 47. Schmidt nailed a 3-pointer half way through the third quarter, giving the Flyers their first lead of the game and that momentum carried over and helped Lewis have a one-point lead heading into the fourth.

Both teams traded baskets throughout the beginning of the fourth quarter as Lewis slowly expanded its lead from one to four. Just under three minutes left, Hilber made two free throws before Michigan Tech went on a 7-2 run to tie the game at 78 with a 1:05 remaining.

Gugliuzza split a pair of free throws and Sloane Zenner sunk four straight free throws for the Huskies, Michigan Tech had a three-point advantage with three second remaining. Following a Lewis timeout, Schmidt nailed a deep 3-pointer off the backboard as time expired to tie the game at 82 and send it to overtime.

Lewis struggled in overtime with Michigan Tech managing to score 13 points in the extra period to seal the win.

Lewis finished the game shooting 39.7 percent (31-for-78) from the floor, was 8-of-25 (32 percent) from behind the arc. The Flyers committed fewer turnover and had more assists than the Huskies for the game. Lewis had four players in double figure scoring, including Schmidt who led all players with 25 points and nine rebounds.

Michigan Tech was led by Ellie Mackay with 23 points. The Huskies shot 45.3 percent (29-for-64) from the field and made 13 3-pointers on the night.
