ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's sixth ranked men's volleyball team bounced back from a loss in its MIVA opener on Thursday with a 3-1 win over No. 12 Ohio State on Saturday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers move to 7-3, 1-1 MIVA on the season while the Buckeyes fall to 4-5, 0-2 MIVA.
Lewis trailed by four midway through the opening stanza but responded with a 13-5 run to take its largest lead of the frame at 23-19 on a kill from
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS). OSU scored two of the next three points to cut the Flyer lead to 24-21 but
Jason Gibbs (Bellaire, Texas/Bellarie) and
Michael Sack (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Laurence) blocked Samuel Clark to give Lewis the set win 25-21.
The Buckeyes dominated the second stanza hitting .370 with 13 kills against three errors in 27 chances while holding Lewis to a .053 hitting percentage. OSU used a a 6-1 run to break a 5-5 tie and eventually led by as many as nine in the 25-16 set win.
The third frame was tightly contested with 14 ties and three lead changes. The Flyers led by as many a three in the stanza but the Buckeyes battled back to tie the set at 23 on a kill from Clark. Lewis got to set point first on a service error from Clark but couldn't put it away as Cole Young tied the set at 24 with a kill.
The Flyers regained the lead on a kill from Mitchem to make it 25-24 but again couldn't finish it as Clark recorded another kill. Mitchem put Lewis ahead 26-25 but Jacob Pasteur tied things at 26 with a kill. The Flyers retook the lead at 27-26 on a hitting error from Pasteur and then closed it out when
Carter Burzlaff (Elgin, Ill./Bartlett High School) blocked Pasteur to give the Flyers a 28-26 victory.
Ohio State led by three midway through the fourth stanza but Lewis answered with a 5-0 run to take its first lead since 10-9. The Buckeyes battled back to within 22-21 after a service error from Gibbs but the Flyers scored the next two points as Luke Lentin committed a service error and
Cole Brillhart (York, Pa./Northeastern) scored with a kill to get Lewis to match point.
OSU fought off the first match point as Pasteur recorded a kill but Clark's ensuing serve missed wide right to give the set to Lewis 25-22.
The Flyers hit .283 in the contest recording 44 kills against 14 errors in 106 chances. Mitchem led the way with 15 kills while hitting .500 for the match and Sack added 10 kills and four blocks.
Tyler Morgan (Dike, Iowa/New Hartford) finished with 22 assists while
Carlos Jimenez (Miami Beach, Fla./FLVS) had seven digs.
The Buckeyes finished the match with a .274 attack percentage with 58 kills but committed 24 errors in 124 chances. Clark had a match-high 19 kills while Pasteur added 16 kills. Noah Platfoot finished with 48 assists and Parker Mikesch added 19 digs.
Lewis hits the road next weekend for a pair of matches at Lindenwood and Quincy. The Flyers take on Lindenwood next Thursday (Feb. 17) at 7 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo. and Quincy next Saturday (Feb. 19) at 7 p.m. in Quincy, Ill.
