ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's basketball team picked up its biggest win of the season on Tuesday evening, knocking off 18th ranked Missouri-St. Louis 70-60 at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 10-12, 8-6 GLVC, while the Tritons drop to 19-3, 15-2 GLVC.
Lewis was held to just two points over the first seven-plus minutes of the contest as UMSL built an early nine-point lead. The Flyers got a spark from
Amelia Motz (Canton, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) off the bench as she scored six straight points and
Grace Hilber (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) knocked down a three to cut the Triton lead to 14-11 by the end of the stanza.
UMSL extended its lead to four early in the second quarter but Lewis went on a 12-3 run over the next four minutes to take its largest lead of the half at 26-21.
Kathryn Schmidt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central) hit back-to-back three's in the run and Hilber added five more points.
The Tritons answered with a 9-2 run of its own to retake the lead at 30-28 on an old fashioned three-point play from Kiara Stewart with 2:05 left in the half. The Flyers tied it on two free throws by Schmidt but UMSL retook the lead on a pair of free throws from Alex LaPorta. Schmidt scored the final points of the half hitting a layup with 0:47 remaining to send the teams into the locker rooms tied at 32 at the break.
Lewis opened the third quarter on a 5-2 run to take a three-point lead but back came the Tritons as they answered with six straight to take a 40-37 lead on a jumper from Shania Liburd with 4:26 left in the quarter. The two sides would trade the next 12 points and were still tied at 46 when UMSL got back-to-back buckets from Stewart and Faye Meissner to take a four-point lead into the final 10 minutes.
The Tritons extended their lead to six early in the final stanza on a layup from Danielle Berry but that would be their last bucket for nearly four minutes as the Flyers went on a 10-0 run to take a 56-52 lead with 5:53 remaining. Schmidt and Hilber hit back-to-back three's in the run to give Lewis the lead for good.
The Flyers pushed their lead to five but UMSL wouldn't go away getting as close as one at 59-58 after a layup from Berry with 2:31 to play but
Taylor Gugliuzza (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) knocked down a huge three in the right corner to put Lewis up four with 2:17 left.
Jalysa Stokes made it a one-possession game but that would be the final points of the contest for the Tritons. Hilber hit a step back three from the top of the key on the ensuing possession and then the Flyers closed the game out at the foul line knocking down five of eight free throws in the final 0:42 seconds to seal the victory.
Lewis shot 45 percent (21-for-47) from the field, was 9-of-18 from downtown and shot 73 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded UMSL 33-31 in the contest. Schmidt had a game-high 20 points while Hilber and Gugliuzza finished with 17 points apiece.
The Tritons were held to 41 percent (24-for-58) in the contest including 3-of-18 from three but were 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. Stewart led three UMSL players in double figures with 14 points while Meissner added 13 and Stokes finished with 12.
The Flyers continue their final homestand of the season this Thursday (Feb. 17) hosting fourth ranked Drury at 5:30 p.m.
