NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lewis University's baseball team dropped its season opener at No. 8 Trevecca Nazarene, 3-2 on Friday afternoon (Feb. 18) at Jackson Field in Nashville, Tennessee. The Flyers are 0-1 to start the season while the Trojans improve to 4-1.
The Trojans scored two runs in the bottom half of the first inning highlighted by a Henry Mosley single with the bases loaded to score Bryant Goolsby and Braden Odom.
Trevecca Nazerene scored their third in the third inning on Paxton Hughes' sacrifice fly to left field that scored Shawn Wallwork.
The Flyers first run came in the top half of the fourth inning when Cherokee LeBeau doubled to left to drive in
Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) who reached on a hit by pitch.
Lewis' second run came in the top of the fifth inning.
Angelo Cantelo (Blue Island, Ill./Marian Catholic) and
Dalton Crowder (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) walked to put runners on first and second.
Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) followed up with a single up the middle to load the bases.
Max Warren (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) drew a bases loaded walk to bring the Flyers within one.
Lewis loaded the bases in the top of the ninth starting with singles by Crowder and Keaty followed by
Michael Alt's (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) walk. The Flyers came up short as Warren grounded into a fielder's choice to third base as Crowder thrown out at the plate and Jack Keele retired Barry on a ground ball to second base to end the game.
The Flyers outhit the Trojans 6-3 in the contest and were led by Keaty with three hits while Crowder, Everett, and Lebeau all had a hit apiece.
Jake Karaba (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) suffered the loss allowing three runs on three hits with six strikeouts to drop to 0-1 to start the season.
The two teams continue their three-game weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon at Jackson Field.
