PLAINFIELD, Ill. – Lewis University's women's tennis team won seven of nine matches in its 6-1 win over Michigan Tech on Friday at Five Star Tennis Center in Plainfield, Ill. The Flyers improve to 3-0 while the Huskies drop to 0-1.
Lewis dropped the first doubles match as Nicole Ballach and Lauren Opalewski beat
Anastasiya Salenko (Kyiv, Ukraine) and
Casey Smith (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. The Flyers bounced back to win the next doubles contests to take the opening point.
Nefeli Zafeiri (Greece) and
Joie Reisch (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township) won at No. 2 doubles over Neva Mana and Chiara Heinz 6-1 and
Sage Hills (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) and
Grace Sueflohn (Delafield, Wis./KM Global Charter School) teamed up to beat Marina Fernandez and Ivona Gorgioski 6-4 in No. 3 doubles action.
Lewis took five of the singles matches beginning with Salenko's win over Opalewski 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Smith followed it up with a straight sets win over Manas 6-2, 7-5,
Jovana Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) rallied to defeat Fernandez 1-6, 6-2, 10-5 at No. 4 singles and Hills defeated Heinz in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 in No. 5 singles play. Reisch won by default at No. 6 singles. Zafeiri dropped her match to Ballach 3-6, 2-6 in No. 1 singles play.
The Flyers return to the courts on Saturday (Feb. 19) as they travel to the University of Chicago to take on the Maroons in dual scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
