QUINCY, Ill. – Lewis University's ninth ranked men's volleyball team bounced back from a tough five-set loss on Friday with a sweep at Quincy on Saturday evening at Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Ill. The Flyers improve to 8-4, 2-2 MIVA while the Hawks drop to 3-7, 0-4 MIVA.
Lewis used a 10-4 run to break a 9-9 tie to take a 19-13 lead after an attack error from Nathan Lawton. The Flyers led grew to as many as seven after another error from Lawton. Lewis would go on to win the opening set 25-18 on a kill from
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS).
The middle stanza went back-and-forth as Quincy led 17-15 midway through the stanza but the Flyers to even things at 18 after a service error by Manuel Hernandez. The two sides traded points and were still tied at 22 after a Niall Burton kill. Lewis would take the second set 25-22 by scoring the final three points of the frame.
Cole Brillhart (York, Pa./Northeastern),
John Davis (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) and
Christian Prayer (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) had a kill each to end the set.
The Flyers built a four-point advantage midway through the final stanza and wouldn't let the Hawks get closer than three as Lewis was able to close out the match with a 25-19 victory. The Flyers hit .286 in the final stanza while holding Quincy to a negative .033 hitting percentage.
Lewis hit .407 for the match recording 46 kills against 11 errors in 86 attacks. Mitchem had a match-high 16 kills and was joined in double figures by Brillhart who had 11 kills.
Kevin Kauling (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) had 37 assists and eight digs. Mitchem also had six blocks.
The Hawks hit only .187 for the match with 34 kills against 17 errors in 91 chances. Lawton led Quincy with 15 kills. Bryce Jones handed out 27 assists and Michal Podgorzak had six digs.
The Flyers are back at home on Thursday (Feb. 24) evening hosting Purdue Fort Wayne at 7 p.m.
