ERIE, Pa. – Lewis University's 17th ranked men's lacrosse team dropped a Top 20 contest at seventh ranked Mercyhurst 17-5 on Monday afternoon at Saxson Stadium in Erie, Pa. The Flyers fall to 2-1 on the season while the Lakers improve to 1-1.
Mercyhurst jumped out to a 2-0 lead halfway through the opening quarter as Myles Hamm scored 0:42 into the contest with an assist from Bryce Johnson. Ethan Landymore made it 2-0 with a goal at the 7:57 mark with an assist from Jacob Emerson.
Lewis cut the Laker lead in half as
Jack Stone (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) scored an unassisted goal at the 5:17 mark of the quarter for his first of two goals on the afternoon.
Landymore scored again with 1:11 remaining in the quarter to push the Mercyhurst lead to 3-1 but the Flyers got a goal from
Baden Boyenko (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph) 0:19 later with an assist from
Xan Brouillet (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) to trail 3-2 after the first 15 minutes of play.
The Lakers dominated the second and third quarters as they outscored Lewis 10-1 to extend their lead to 13-3 heading into the final frame.
The Flyers scored the first two goals of the final quarter as
Drew Kask (Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) scored with an assist from
Evan Clement (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) at the 14:11 mark and less than a minute Boyenko added an unassisted goal for his second of the afternoon.
Mercyhurst tacked on four goals over the remainder of the quarter for the final margin.
Lewis was outshot in the contest 52-33 but only 27-21 in shots on goal. Stone and Boyenko had two goals apiece for the Flyers with Kask adding one.
Riah Rathe (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) made seven saves in goal while
Josh Calvin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame College Prepatory HS) stopped three shots.
Landymore led the Lakers with six goals and added an assist for seven points in the contest. Luke Ingianni finished with two goals while Johnson had five assists. Brett Olney stopped 16 of the 21 shots he faced in goal to pick up his first win of the season.
Lewis is back in action this Saturday (Feb. 26) as it travels to St. Louis to take on Maryville in a non-conference game beginning at 11 a.m.
