ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Lewis University women's basketball team fell to Maryville 67-60 Thursday (Feb. 24) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at Moloney Arena. The Flyers fall to 13-13 overall 11-7 in the GLVC, while the Saints move to 13-12 overall, 9-10 in the GLVC.
The Flyers fell behind early on a Maryville three-pointer, but took their first lead of the game at 6-5 on a layup by
Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva). They made it a 10-8 advantage on a
Kathryn Schmidt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central) layup midway through the first quarter. However, that was their last field goal of the quarter.
A pair of free throws by
Taylor Gugliuzza (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) gave the Flyers a 12-10 lead with three minutes left in the quarter, but the Saints hit a three-pointer for the final points of the quarter and led 13-12 after one.
Hart hit a pair of three-pointers early in the second quarter to give Lewis an 18-15 advantage, but Maryville answered with a 13-1 run to take a 28-19 lead with 3:16 remaining in the half.
A
Grace Hilber (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) three-pointer stopped the run and helped the Flyers finish the half on a 9-2 spurt to cut the deficit to two points, 30-28 at the half.
Maryville opened the second half on a quick 7-1 spurt to pull ahead 37-29 with 8:49 left in the third quarter. The lead grew to 10 points at 43-33 midway through the third quarter before baskets by Hilber and
Amelia Motz (Canton, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) cut the deficit to six points. The Flyers trailed 47-39 after three quarters.
The Saints led by as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter and led 60-50 with 3:55 remaining when Lewis made its run.

Taylor Gugliuzza (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) then forced a turnover and was fouled, splitting a pair of free throws, making it a two-point game. However, the Saints made seven of eight free throws down the stretch to clinch the victory.
Taylor Gugliuzza (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) led the way for Lewis with 19 points, while Schmidt had 12 points and 16 rebounds. The Flyers shot 32.8 percent (21-of-64) from the floor, while the Saints shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55). Maryville had a 40-39 rebounding edge, but turned the ball over 18 times to 14 from Lewis.
The Flyers conclude their regular season Saturday with a 1 p.m. tip at Missouri S&T in Rolla.
