ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Lewis University's women's lacrosse team opened its 2022 season with a 20-5 win at Concordia Ann Arbor on Friday afternoon in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Flyers are 1-0 on the season while the Cardinals fall to 0-3.
It's the first season opening win in program history for Lewis and also the first win for first year head coach
Molly Byrne. The 20 goals scored are second most in a single game in program history.
The Flyers fell behind 1:01 into the contest as Cassandra Allard scored on a free position shot. Lewis scored twice in the final four minutes of the quarter as
Skylar Lucich (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) scored the equalizer at the 3:40 mark of the quarter and
Jamie Rieger (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) scored the go-ahead goal with an assist from
Alyson Jines (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley High School) with 0:22 left in the opening period.
The Flyers extended their lead 2:35 into the second quarter as
Paige Bracey (Apex, N.C./Apex) scored her first goal of the season with an assist from
Meltonique Bowen (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Flanagan). Concordia Ann Arbor got back-to-back goals from Greyson Papp in the span of 1:45 to even the score at 3-3.
Lewis scored four goals in a span of 5:10 to retake the lead. Bracey put them back in front with an assist from Lucich and then
Lindsey Traub (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard High School) scored three straight goals with two assists from Jines and one from Lucich to make it 7-3.
Papp scored her third goal of the frame with 3:49 left to make it 7-4 but the Flyers scored the final three goals of the stanza as
Emily Meredith (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) scored her first of the season and Bracey would add her third and fourth goals of the quarter to give Lewis a six-goal lead at halftime.
The Flyers scored the first six goals of the third quarter to extend their lead to 16-4 as Rieger, Jines, Bowen, Traub, Meredith and
Cici Roney (Arlington Heights, Ill./Saint Viator) all scored in the quarter. The Cardinals got a goal from Nicole Bordo with 4:27 left in the stanza for their only tally of the frame.
Lewis scored the final four goals of the contest as Roney added her second of the contest,
Carlie Serritella (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) scored two more and Lucich added her second of the contest.
Bracey and Traub had four goals apiece to lead the Flyers while Lucich, Rieger, Serritella, Roney and Meredith finished with two goals each. Lucich and Jines had three assists apiece.
Brigid Fornek (Lawrenceville, Ga./Grayson) and
Faith Engle (Marysville, OH/Marysville High School) each made three saves in goal as Fornek picked up the victory.
Lewis outshot the Cardinals 34-12 including 26-11 in shots on goal. The Flyers were 14-of-17 in clear attempts, caused 17 turnovers and scooped up 16 ground balls.
CUAA was led by Papp with three goals while Allard and Bordo had one each.
Lewis is back in action as it travels to Marquette, Mich., to take on Northern Michigan on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CST).
