PLAINFIELD, Ill. – Lewis University's men's tennis team opened up its spring season with a 5-2 win over Hillsdale on Sunday at Five Star Tennis Center in Plainfield, Ill. The Flyers (1-0) won two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles contests to secure the victory over the Chargers (1-1).
Oliwer Wierzbicki (Szczecin, Poland) and
Andrej Zoranovic (Ottawa, Ontario, Canda) opened the match with 6-1 win over Daniel Gilbert and Bogdan Janicijevic at No. 3 doubles. Lewis' number one doubles team of
Juan Martin Ramirez Mejia (Medellin, Colombia/) and
David Ambrozic (Portoroz, Slovenia/) secured the first point of the match defeating Brennan Cimpeanu and Sean Barstow 6-3.
Oskar Lusti (Tallinn, Estonia/) and
Pedja Trifunovic (Aleksandrovac, Serbia/) lost to Tyler Conrad and Jonathan Degtyaryov 5-4 at number two doubles.
Hillsdale won the first singles match as Conrad beat Trifunovic in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to tie the match at one but the Flyers would win the next four contests to clinch the match. Ramirez Mejia knocked of Cimpeanu at No. 1 singles 7-5, 3-2, Ambrozic followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Degtyaryov at number four singles and Lusti rallied to defeat Barstow in three sets 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in No. 2 singles play and Wierzbicki beat Gilbert 6-2, 6-3 in number five singles action. Zoranovic lost the final match to Janicijevic 6-2, 3-6, 9-11 at No. 6 singles.
Lewis returns to the courts on Friday (Feb. 11) hosting Quincy at 8:30 a.m. at Five Star Tennis Center in Plainfield, Ill.
