ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University women's basketball team defeated Illinois Springfield 72-60 Monday (Feb. 7) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Neil Carey Arena. With the win the Flyers move to 7-12 overall, 5-6 in the GLVC, while the Prairie Stars fall to 13-7 overall, 8-6 in the GLVC.
Lewis never trailed in the contest, scoring the first points of the game on a layup by
Taylor Gugliuzza (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West). The Flyers built an early four-point lead at 9-5 before UIS evened the score at 9-9 with 3:39 left in the first quarter.Â
A layup by
Amelia Motz (Canton, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) would give Lewis the lead for good as it finished the quarter on a 12-4 run to take a 21-13 lead after the first quarter as
Kathryn Schmidt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central) finished the period off with a three-pointer.
It took more than two minutes before points were scored in the second quarter, but it was again Schmidt who scored on a jumper, increasing the lead to 23-15. Schmidt later build the lead to the biggest of the half at 30-19 on a layup before the Flyers went into the half leading 40-30.
A bucket from
Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and a three-pointer by Gugliuzza early in the second half built the lead to 47-32 with 7:22 left in the third quarter. The Prairie Stars battled back to within nine points at 51-42 with 2:36 left in the period, but a
Lily Courier (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township)Â three-pointer stopped the run. Lewis led 56-46 after three.
UIS scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to get to within six points, but a conventional three-point play by Schmidt started an 8-0 spurt, ending with a 64-50 advantage for the Flyers with 5:57 remaining. Lewis was able to keep a double digit lead the remainder of the game.
Schmidt finished with 23 points and seven rebounds to lead Lewis. Gugliuzza had 16 points, eight rebounds and six blocks, while Motz added 13 points and seven rebounds. Lewis outrebounded the Prairie Stars 39-34 for the contest. The Flyers shot 47.5 percent (29-of-61) from the floor, while UIS shot 33.3 percent (21-of-63).
