HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Lewis University's 36th ranked men's tennis team had its three match winning streak snapped in a 4-2 loss against Barton on Friday in Hilton Head, S.C. The Flyers second match of the day against Benedict was canceled due to rain.
Lewis (7-3) took the first doubles match as
David Ambrozic (Portoroz, Slovenia/) and
Juan Martin Ramirez Mejia (Medellin, Colombia/) defeated Kristoffer Staahlbrand and Oscar Marmestedt 6-2 but the Bulldogs (7-5) won the next two doubles matches as Diego Agudelo and Philip Nordberg beat
Pedja Trifunovic (Aleksandrovac, Serbia/) and
Oskar Lusti (Tallinn, Estonia/) 6-4 in the second doubles match and Tylehed Hannes and Johan Hogersson defeated
Oliwer Wierzbicki (Szczecin, Poland) and
Andrej Zoranovic (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) 7-6 in the final doubles match.
Barton won three of the first four singles matches to seal the win. Nordberg beat Trifunovic in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Agudelo defeated Lusti 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 in the second singles match to extend the lead to 3-0. The Flyers got on the board as Ambrozic knocked off Marmestedt 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
The Bulldogs clinched the match with Staahlbrand beating Ramirez Mejia in an epic match. Staahlbrand won the first set 6-2 but Ramirez Mejia won the second set 6-2 and the third set went overtime with Staahlbrand coming away victorious with a 13-11 win. Wierzbicki beat Tylehed 5-3 and the final singles match between Zoranovic and Holgersson was unfinished with Holgersson winning the first set 7-5 and was up 3-2 in the second set when the match was called.
Lewis returns to the courts on Friday (March 18) when it takes on Wheaton at 1:45 p.m. in Wheaton, Ill.
