HONOLULU – Lewis University's 12th ranked men's volleyball team fell to fourth ranked Hawaii in straight sets on Thursday evening at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu. The Flyers fall to 10-7 while the Rainbow Warriors improve to 15-3.
Lewis had a hard time slowing down Hawaii's offense in the opening frame as the Rainbow Warriors hit .750 with 15 kills against zero errors in 20 chances. They led by as many as 10 in the frame and were led by Guilherme Voss and Max Rosenfeld who combined for seven kills.
Hawaii scored the first two points of the middle stanza but the Flyers came right back scoring back-to-back points to even things at two. The Rainbow Warriors took the lead for good in the stanza scoring four straight points. That lead grew to as many as eight at 15-7 after an error by
Cole Brillhart (York, Pa./Northeastern). Lewis made a late run scoring five straight to get within 22-21 after an error from Spyros Chakas. Hawaii called a timeout to stop the run and then scored the final three points of the set to win it 25-21.
The Flyers fell behind by two to begin the third set and weren't able to get closer than a point the rest of the stanza. The Rainbow Warriors extended their lead to as many as seven after back-to-back kills from Dimitrios Mouchlias. Lewis went on a late run to close within 20-17 after a kill from
Max Roquet (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) but it wouldn't be enough as Hawaii finished the match on a 5-2 run to win the set 25-19.
The Flyers hit .221 for the contest recording 34 kills against 16 errors in 81 chances.
Max Roquet (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) led the way for Lewis with 11 kills while
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) added seven kills.
Kevin Kauling (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) had four kills, 23 assists and six digs in the contest. Roquet also added six digs as well. Mitchem finished with four total blocks.
The Rainbow Warriors hit .424 in the match with 47 kills against 11 errors in 85 swings. Chakas finished with a match-high 14 kills while Mouchlias added 12 kills. Jakob Thelle had a match-high 40 assists, Brett Sheward had seven digs and Voss had two blocks.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday evening at 11 p.m. (CST) at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
