HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Lewis University's women's tennis team extended its winning streak to three with a 7-0 win over Barton on Friday morning in Hilton Head, S.C. The Flyers second match of the day against Benedict was canceled due to rain.
Lewis (7-3) won eight of the nine matches in the dual against the Bulldogs (4-5). The Flyers won two of the three doubles matches to take the opening point of the match.
Nefeli Zafeiri (Greece) and
Casey Smith (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) defated Eimear Maher and Isabella Pita 6-1 in the first doubles match and then
Jovana Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) and
Grace Sueflohn (Delafield, Wis./KM Global Charter School) sealed the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Silvia Fernandez-Trabadelo and Luciana Prudencio at number three doubles. Barton's number two doubles team of Maren Kronsbein and Tilde Howeler beat Lewis' duo of
Joie Reisch (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township) and
Anastasiya Salenko (Kyiv, Ukraine) 6-4.
The Flyers swept the singles competition with Salenko defeating Maher 6-0, 1-0 at No. 1 singles, Zafeiri rallied to defeat Kronsbein in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 in the second singles match. Smith came from behind to beat Howeler 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 10-5 at No. 3 singles. Vujanic defeated Fernandez-Trabedelo 6-1, 5-7, 10-2 in the fourth singles competition. Resich beat Pita in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 and
Sage Hills (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) handed Grace McCartney a 6-0, 6-2 defeat in the final singles match.
Lewis returns to the courts on Thursday (March 24) as it takes on crosstown rival St. Francis at 12:45 p.m. in Joliet.
