Lewis Softball Swept In GLVC Opener By Missouri-St. Louis

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team was swept by Missouri-St. Louis in the GLVC opening doubleheader for both teams on Sunday afternoon at The Ballpark in Rosemont in Rosemont, Ill. The Tritons (13-8, 2-0 GLVC) won the opener 6-4 in 11 innings and rallied to win the nightcap 7-5.

Game 1 – Missouri-St. Louis 6, Lewis 4 11 innings
The Flyers (9-9, 0-2) scored the first run of the contest with two out in the second inning. Jalyn Powell (Tolono, Ill./Unity) was on second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Riley Schultz and scored on a throwing error by Corinne Daley to make it 1-0.

UMSL came right back scoring twice in the top of the third to take the lead. Megan Brown drove in the first run with a single through the left side of the infield to drive in Maddie Snemis and later in the inning Irene Travis singled to left field to score McKenzie Lamos.

It remained that way until the bottom of the sixth. Delaney Garden (Carpentersville, Ill./H.D. Jacobs) hit one inside the first base bag past Sara Fredrickson and it rolled down into the right field corner for a triple. Garden scored the tying run as the throw back in from Morgan Barnoski was mishandled.

Lewis loaded the bases with two out in the inning but Jalyn Powell (Tolono, Ill./Unity) struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Tritons regained the lead in the seventh as Snemis scored on a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of Brown to make it 3-2.

The Flyers, down to their final out, rallied in the seventh. Maggie Joutras (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic High School), pinch hitting for Gabi Nilles (North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora), doubled over the head of Daley in center and scored on Garden's single through the right side of the infield that was knocked down by Kayla Settles but the ball rolled into shallow right allowing Joutras to score the tying run. Lewis had another chance to win the game but Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) flew out down the right field line to end the inning.

UMSL regained the lead in the ninth as Lamos led off the inning with a triple to center and scored on Daley's sacrifice fly to right.

The Flyers answered again in the ninth as Garden hit a fly ball to left that should've ended the game but Snemis dropped the ball allowing Carrie Anderson (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community) to score from second with the tying run. Lewis had its third chance to end the game but Serena grounded out to first to end the inning.

The Tritons scored twice in the 11th as Lamos hit her second triple of the contest and scored on Daley's double down the right field line. Barnoski drove in the final run with a sac fly to left to score Daley with an insurance run.

Annie Scaramuzzi set down the Flyers in order in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win.

Lewis had eight hits in the contest and was led by Garden and Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) with two each. Garden took the loss in the circle as she pitched a complete game allowing six runs, five earned, on 15 hits with seven strikeouts against three walks. She fell to 4-3 on the season.

Game 2 – Missouri-St. Louis 7 Lewis 5
The Flyers got off to a good start in the second game of the doubleheader scoring three runs on a hit and an error in their half of the first. Garden led off the game with a walk, went to second on Serena's single up the middle and scored on Evie Calderon's (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) sacrifice bunt and a throwing error by Anna VanGundy.

Serena scored on Kavalauskas' ground ball to second as Settles tried to throw Serena out at the plate but Serena got in ahead of the tag to make it 2-0. Bontrager then reached on a successful squeeze bunt to third as VanGundy tried to get Calderon at the plate but the throw wasn't in time.

UMSL got a run back in the second as Scaramuzzi tripled to right center with one out and scored on Schultz's groundout to third.

Lewis got that run back in its half of the second as Nilles tripled to right to start the inning and then she scored on Garden's double inside the third base bag and down the left field line to make it 4-1.

The Tritons scored twice in the third on an RBI single from Daley and an RBI double from Scaramuzzi to make it 4-3.

UMSL sent nine batters to the plate in the fourth scoring four runs on four hits with an error to take a 7-4 lead. Daly had the big hit in the inning as she lined a single back up the middle that Payton Wuske (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) got a glove on but deflected it into shallow left center allowing two runs to score. The Tritons added an insurance run later in the inning as Scaramuzzi hit a comebacker to Wuske allowing Lamos to score.

The Flyers got a run back in the sixth as Joutras led off the inning with a double to left and scored on Garden's single to third and subsequent throwing error by VanGundy to make it 7-5. Lewis had the tying runs in scoring position but Serena struck out
swinging and Nichole Kiddy (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge), pinch hitting for Calderon, was called out on strikes to end the inning.

The Flyers had the tying runs on base again in the seventh but Wuske lined out softly to short to end the game.

Lewis finished with eight hits in game two and was led by Nilles and Garden with two apiece. Wuske tossed a complete game allowing seven runs on nine hits with five walks and three strikeouts to fall to 4-2 and saw her four-game winning streak snapped.

The Flyers are back in action on Monday as they host McKendree at the Dome at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont in a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m.
