ST. LOUIS – Lewis University's men's lacrosse team held off a second half rally to defeat Alabama-Huntsville 14-12 and win its third straight on Tuesday afternoon at the Maryville Lacrosse Field in St. Louis. The Flyers improve to 6-2 on the season while the Chargers drop to 3-5.
Lewis got on the board first as
Evan Clement (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) scored his 13th goal of the season less than three minutes into the contest. The Chargers evened the score two minutes later but the remainder of the quarter belonged to the Flyers as they scored three goals in the span of 7:42.
Jack Stone (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) put Lewis back in front with his first of four goals in the contest at the 7:52 mark of the stanza.
Drew Kask (Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) and
Kevin Blaz (McHenry, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) scored the final two goals of the quarter.
UAH cut the Flyer lead to 4-2 early in the second frame but Lewis went onto score the final six goals of the quarter to take a 10-2 lead into the break. Stone and
Nolan Dalep (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Claremont Secondary School) each scored twice in the stanza while Blaz and
Luke Schroeder (Plymouth, Minn./Totino Grace) had one goal apiece.
The Chargers rallied in the third quarter outscoring Lewis 6-1 to cut the Flyer lead to just three by the end of the quarter.
Lewis extended its lead to 12-8 as Kask scored a man-up goal 0:20 into the final stanza but Alabama-Huntsville wouldn't go away scoring twice in the span 1:22 to cut the Flyer lead to 12-10.
Lewis regained its four goal cushion as
Nate McLean (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and Dalep scored back-to-back in the span of 0:58.
The Chargers added pair of late goals as Brayden O'Neill scored with 3:04 remaining and Brody Phillips scored his third of the game for the final margin.
The Flyers were outshot in the contest 42-38 but each side had 24 shots on goal. Stone had a game-high with his four goals scored while Dalep added three and Blaz and Kask had two goals apiece.
Riah Rathe (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) made 12 saves in goal.
Lewis caused 11 turnovers in the contest with
Tyler Shively-Ablang (Las Vegas, Nev./Northwest Career and Technical School) causing three of those while
Zack Merwin (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) and
Drew Dingle (Verona, Wis./Verona) had two each. The Flyers scooped up 31 ground balls with Dingle picking up five while
Sam Kern (Delano, Minn./Delano) added four.
Lewis returns to action next Wednesday, March 23, as it travels to Indianapolis to take on fourth ranked UIndy at 3 p.m. (CDT).
