INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis University's men's lacrosse team had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 10-6 loss at No. 8 Indianapolis on Wednesday afternoon at Key Stadium. The Flyers drop to 6-3, 1-1 GLVC while the Greyhounds improve to 8-1, 1-1 GLVC.
UIndy opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first 3:20 of the contest. Sam Arfsten scored the first goal of the game with an assist from Drew Billig and then 0:42 later Billig made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal.
Lewis scored its first goal at the 10:27 mark of the opening quarter as
Xan Brouillet (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) beat the keeper from the right wing for his fifth goal of the season. The Flyers scored the final two goals of the opening frame as
Drew Kask (Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) tied the game on the extra-man opportunity with 2:42 left in the stanza and then
Evan Clement (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) gave Lewis the lead with an unassisted goal with 1:08 remaining in the quarter.
The Greyhounds tied the game 1:06 in the second stanza as Brian Robb scored an unassisted goal and then later in the quarter Wyatt Auyer gave the Hounds a 4-3 lead with an unassisted goal.
The Flyers had four chances at the equalizer over the remainder of the quarter but were denied twice by Austin Barnett.
UIndy extended its lead with two goals in the first 80 seconds of the third quarter as Parker Johnson and Ben Foster scored to make it 6-3. Lewis got one of those goals back as
Nolan Dalep (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Claremont Secondary School) scored on an assist from
Baden Boyenko (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph).
The Hounds extended its lead to 7-4 as Auyer scored his second of the contest with an assist from Billig.
The Flyers scored the final two goals of the quarter to cut the UIndy lead to 7-6 by the end of the quarter. Boyenko scored the first of those goals on an assist from Dalep and then in the closing seconds of the quarter Clement scored his second of the contest off an assist from Boyenko.
Lewis had a chance to tie the game on the extra-man opportunity early in the fourth quarter but weren't able to get either of their shots past Barnett.
The Greyhounds scored the final three goals of the contest to seal the victory. Foster scored on the extra-man opportunity with 10:32 remaining in the contest to make it 8-6. Billig added his second of the contest to extend the lead to 9-6 halfway through the final stanza and Easton Ong scored on an assist from Billig for the final goal of the game.
The Flyers were outshot in the contest 41-26 but only 21-18 in shots on goal. Clement led the way for Lewis with a pair of goals while Brouillet, Kask, Dalep and Boyenko had one apiece.
Domenic Tarello (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) was 6-for-9 at the face-off dot and
Peter Carlson (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) scooped up four ground balls.
Riah Rathe (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) made 11 saves in goal.
Auyer, Billig and Foster had two goals apiece for UIndy. Caleb Parker won nine of 16 face-offs and Billig scooped up six ground balls. Barnett stopped 12 shots in goal.
The Flyers are back at home this Saturday (March 26) as they take on Walsh at 12 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
