ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's lacrosse team got off to a fast start in its 11-6 win over Walsh on Saturday afternoon at Lewis Stadium in Romeoville, Ill. The Flyers improve to 7-3 while the Cavaliers drop to 2-5.
Lewis scored the only two goals of the opening period as Dalep started the scoring 0:07 into the game for the fastest goal scored in school history. Dalep added his second goal of the quarter 4:33 later when he scored another unassisted goal.
The Flyers scored three times in the first 2:34 of the second stanza as
Luke Schroeder (Plymouth, Minn./Totino Grace) made it 3-0 with an assist from
Jack Stone (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) 1:14 in.
Baden Boyenko (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph) scored his first of the game 0:45 later to make it 4-0 and then Stone scored at the 12:26 mark to make it 5-0. Boyenko added his second of the quarter at the 7:33 mark and then Dalep scored his third of the half with 5:47 remaining to make it 7-0.
Walsh scored in the closing seconds of the half as Colby Bowman scored with 0:04 remaining to cut Lewis' lead to 7-1 at the break.
The Flyers extended their lead back to seven early in the third quarter as Schroeder scored his second of the game. The Cavaliers got back-to-back goals from Bowman and Sully Dowling to cut Lewis' lead to 8-3 heading into the final frame.
Walsh crept a little closer as Dowling scored 0:39 into the fourth quarter to make it 8-4. The Flyers got back-to-back goals from
Nate McLean (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and Stone to push the lead back to six. Issac Stertz and Bowman scored back-to-back goals to pull back within four with 4:08 to go.
Lewis sealed the victory as Boyenko scored his third goal of the contest with 1:39 left with an assist from
Luke Schroeder (Plymouth, Minn./Totino Grace).
The Flyers outshot the Cavaliers 40-26 in the contest including 21-19 in shots on goal. Dalep and Boyenko had three goals apiece for Lewis while Stone and Schroeder added two each.
Riah Rathe (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) made 13 saves in the contest.
The Flyers caused 13 turnovers in the contest with
Xan Brouillet (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) recording three of them while
Sam Kern (Delano, Minn./Delano) and Dalep had two each.
Peter Carlson (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) scooped up eight ground balls in the win.
Lewis is back at home next Saturday hosting Rockhurst at 11 a.m. at Lewis Stadium.
