EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's basketball team hit a season-high 14 three's in its 83-75 win over Truman State in the quarterfinal round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon at First Community Arena in Edwardsville, Ill. The Flyers improve to 15-14 while the Bulldogs drop to 18-11.

Lewis trailed by as many as four in the opening quarter but got hot over the final five minutes of the stanza as it hit seven of its last eight shots including all four from beyond the arc to take a 28-22 lead into the second frame.

Truman scored the first five points of the second quarter but that would be the closest they got as the Flyers went on an 11-5 run to extend its lead to seven on a three-pointer from Taylor Gugliuzza (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) with 4:36 remaining in the half. The Bulldogs cut the margin to six but Lewis closed the quarter on a 9-4 run to take an 11-point lead into the locker room at the half.

The Flyers extended their lead to 13 early in the third quarter after a layup by Lily Courier (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) but Truman chipped away at the lead getting it six with 3:33 remaining in the stanza on a three-pointer by Hannah Belanger. Lewis withstood the run outscoring the Bulldogs 8-3 over the remainder of the quarter to regain its 11-point lead heading into the final stanza.

The Flyers struggled to score in the first half of the final quarter as they were held to just two points but Truman wasn't able to take advantage as they only scored six points. Kathryn Schmidt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central) broke the scoring drought for Lewis hitting a three from the left wing but the Dawgs answered with an 8-2 run to make it a four-point game with 1:49 remaining.

Neither side scored for nearly a minute until Amelia Motz (Canton, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) found Courier cutting to the basket for a layup with 0:53 left to extend the lead to six. Ellie Weltha missed a layup on the other end as Motz got the rebound and Truman was forced to foul to extend the game.

Grace Hilber (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) and Gugliuzza each hit 1-of-2 at the line in the final 0:42 to extend the lead to eight and the Bulldogs wouldn't score for the remainder of the game as the Flyers sealed the victory.

Lewis shot 47 percent (32-for-68) from the floor including 14-of-27 from three and shot 56 percent at the charity stripe. It was outrebounded 40-29 in the contest but forced Truman to turn it over 17 times resulting in 17 points.

Hilber led four Flyers in double figures with 24 points while Schmidt added 21, Gugliuzza chipped in with 15 and Courier added 14. Schmidt added eight boards and Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) finished with six assists.

The Bulldogs shot 48 percent (28-for-58) from the field but were only 10-of-27 from beyond the arc and shot 64 percent at the line. Weltha finished with 29 points and 17 rebounds and she was joined in double figures by Belanger with 28 points.

Lewis advances to the semifinal round of the GLVC Tournament for the eighth time in the last nine years and will take on top seeded Southern Indiana on Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. at First Community Arena in Edwardsville, Ill. The Flyers defeated USI 72-63 on Jan. 22 at Screaming Eagle Arena in Evansville, Ind.
