Flyers Defeat Ashland 9-7 In Home Opener

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's lacrosse team defeated Ashland 9-7 to win its home opener on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium in Romeoville, Ill. The Flyers improve to 2-1 while the Eagles drop to 0-3.

Lewis got off to a great start scoring five goals in the opening quarter and were led by Emily Meredith (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Skylar Lucich (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) with two goals each.

The Flyers added two more goals in the second quarter as Carlie Serritella (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) scored twice in the span of a 1:56 to extend the lead to 7-0.

Ashland scored a goal in the final seconds of the half to cut Lewis' lead to 7-1 at the break.

The Eagles dominated the third quarter scoring five times as Cora Wilson scored twice while Cassady Becker, Madie Gash and Natalie Sonntag added one each to make it 7-6 heading into the final 15 minutes.

Sonntag scored her second of the game 2:12 into the final frame to even the game at 7-7 but the Flyers came back as Serritella scored the game-winner with 8:13 remaining with an assist from Alyson Jines (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley High School).

Lewis added an insurance goal with 1:12 to go as Lindsay Traub scored her second of the contest with an assist from Meredith.

Serritella had a hat trick in the contest while Meredith, Lucich and Traub added two apiece. Jordana Doshna (Waterford, Conn./The Ethel Walker School) made three saves in goal to pick up her first collegiate win. Serritella caused three turnovers in the contest while Meredith and Katelyn Kuzmanko (West Olive, Mich./West Ottawa High School) scooped up four ground balls each.

The Flyers head to Alabama for a pair of matches this week beginning on Wednesday at Montevallo at 7:30 p.m.
