Lewis Women’s Lacrosse Starts Fast But Falls To Montevallo 12-8

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Lewis University's women's lacrosse team got off to a fast start but fell at Montevallo 12-8 on Wednesday evening at the Montevallo Lacrosse Stadium in Montevallo, Ala. The Flyers drop to 2-2 on the season while the Falcons improve to 3-4.

Montevallo scored the game's first goal as Lily McCormick scored an unassisted goal less than two minutes into the contest. Lewis responded with three straight goals over a span of 7:06 in the opening frame.

Skylar Lucich (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) scored the tying goal at the 7:42 mark with an assist from Emily Meredith (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley). Carlie Serritella (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) gave the Flyers the lead with a goal 1:23 later off an assist from Katelyn Kuzmanko (West Olive, Mich./West Ottawa High School) and Jamie Rieger (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) scored the third goal with 0:36 left in the quarter as Lewis was down a player due to a penalty.

The Flyers extended their lead 5:05 into the second quarter as Serritella scored her second of the contest with another assist from Meredith.

The remainder of the quarter belonged to the Falcons as they scored the next six goals of the quarter to take a 7-4 lead into the break. Rylee Horton scored two of those goals for Montevallo.

The Falcons extended their lead to four as Anja Kuys scored her second of the contest 0:44 into the third quarter. Lewis got a goal back as Paige Bracey (Apex, N.C./Apex) scored an unassisted goal with less than three minutes remaining in the frame. Montevallo extended its lead to five with two goals in the span of 0:17 late in the period.

The Flyers got back-to-back goals from Sydney Able (Aurora, Colo./Regis Jesuit) and Cici Roney (Arlington Heights, Ill./Saint Viator) 61 seconds apart to cut the Falcon lead to three early in the fourth quarter. Hannah Fortin pushed the margin back to four but Roney scored again to make it a three-goal contest with 5:50 to play. Fortin sealed the victory with her second goal of the quarter 1:22 after Roney scored.

Lewis outshot Montevallo 27-22 in the contest including 19-16 in shots on goal. It caused seven turnovers and scooped up nine ground balls. Serritella and Roney led the way for the Flyers with two goals apiece. Brigid Fornek (Lawrenceville, Ga./Grayson) made four saves in goal.

Lewis concludes its road trip on Friday at Alabama-Huntsville at 6 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala.
