ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's tennis team fell to Florida Southern 6-1 on Sunday afternoon to begin its Spring Break trip in Hilton Head S.C. The Flyers fall to 4-3 while the Moccasins improve to 4-2.
Lewis won the opening doubles match as its number one team of
Nefeli Zafeiri (Greece) and
Casey Smith (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) defeated Laura Vetter and Mathilda Vidgren 6-4. FSC won the next two doubles matches to win the opening point. Minnie Kim and Vivien Charvatova beat
Anastasiya Salenko (Kyiv, Ukraine) and
Joie Reisch (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township) 6-4 at No. 2 doubles and Maxima Ellenberg and Flor Salerno defeated
Jovana Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) and
Sophie Davis (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) 6-2.
The Flyers tied the match as Salenko rallied to defeat Vetter 4-6, 6-1 and 10-6 in a tiebreak at number one singles. Zafeiri fell to Vidgren in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 at in the number two singles match, Smith dropped a three-set match to Kim 6-1, 4-6, 3-10 in number three singles play. At No. 4 singles it was Isabella Bolivar knocking off Vujanic 6-2, 6-4, Reisch was beaten by Ellenberg 6-2, 6-4 in number five singles action and Sage Hill lost to Olivia Bryant 6-2, 6-3 in the final singles match.
Lewis is back on the courts on Monday afternoon as it takes on West Liberty at 4 p.m. (CST) in Hilton Head, S.C.
