HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Lewis University women's tennis team defeated West Liberty 4-0 Monday (March 7) in a nonconference match. The Flyers move to 5-3 on the year, while West Liberty falls to 2-1.
Lewis won the doubles point after winning two of the three matches.
Joie Reisch (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township) and
Anastasiya Salenko (Kyiv, Ukraine) defeated Gemma Cliffe and Evelina Martirosyan at No. 2 doubles 6-1 and
Sage Hills (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) and
Grace Sueflohn (Delafield, Wis./KM Global Charter School) beat Nathalia Valencia and Jacqueline Pena-Aceves 6-2 at No. 3. The No. 1 team of
Nefeli Zafeiri (Greece) and
Casey Smith (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) fell to Emma Arnal and Daria Shchoma 6-4.
The Flyers won all three singles matches that finished to win the match. Smith won 7-5, 7-5 at No. 3 singles over Cliffe,
Jovana Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) beat Valencia 6-0, 7-5 and Reisch took down Pena-Aceves 6-4, 6-1. Salenko won her first set 6-3 and was tied 5-5 at No. 1 singles in the second set before her match ended, while Zafeiri was down 5-4 in the first set at No. 2 singles and Hills won 7-6 and was up 6-4 in the second set at No. 6 singles in her unfinished match.
Lewis returns to the courts Wednesday at 7:15 vs. Lake Superior State in Hilton Head.
