HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Lewis University women's tennis team defeated Lake Superior State 4-1 Wednesday (March 9) in a nonconference match. The Flyers improve to 6-3 on the season, while the Lakers dropped to 2-4.
Lewis lost the doubles point, winning only at No. 1 doubles, with
Nefeli Zafeiri (Greece) and
Casey Smith (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) defeating Milena Baigorria and Nadege Koua 7-5. The No. 2 doubles team for the Lakers of Muskaan Ranjan and Maddie Whip beat Lewis'
Joie Reisch (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township) and
Anastasiya Salenko (Kyiv, Ukraine) 6-3, while the No. 3 tandem of Keegan Malpass and Claudia Sole defeated
Jovana Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) and
Grace Sueflohn (Delafield, Wis./KM Global Charter School) of Lewis 7-6 (7-5).
In singles it was a different story as Lewis dominated, going 4-0. Salenko won at No. 1, beating Koua 7-6 (7-3), 6-0. Zafeiri won at No. 2 6-0, 6-3 over Baigorria, while Smith won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 over Ranjan and Vujanic won 6-2, 6-3 over Sole at No. 4. Reisch was trailing 5-4 in the first set of her unfinished match at No. 5 singles, while
Sage Hills (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) won her first set at No. 6 singles 6-3.
Lewis faces Barton College at 7:30 a.m. Friday and Benedict College at 3:30 p.m. Friday to finish its Spring Break trip.
