ROLLA, Mo. – Lewis University's baseball team opened its four-game weekend series at Missouri S&T with a 13-3 win on Friday afternoon at the Ballpark at S&T in Rolla, Mo. The Flyers improve to 7-10-1, 3-2 GLVC while the Miners drop to 13-9, 2-3 GLVC.
Lewis jumped out to the early scoring four runs on four hits and an error in the top of the second.
Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) scored the first run on an error by the second baseman on a ground ball off the bat of
Julian Everett (Frankfort, Ill/Lincoln Way East).
Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) made it 3-0 later in the inning hitting a two-run single through the left side of the infield.
David Ascencio (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) drove in Fox with the final run of the frame with a single to right center.
S&T got a run back in the fourth on two-out single to right off the bat of Chase Burgess to drive in Andrew Branson.
Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) extended the Flyer lead to 5-1 as he drove in
Angelo Cantelo (Blue Island, Ill./Marian Catholic) with a sacrifice fly to center.
Lewis broke it open in the seventh inning as it sent 10 batters to the plate scoring five runs on three hits.
Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring home Ascencio. Barry scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-1. Fox drove in two more runs with a single to right to drive in Alt and Keaty and
Joe Preusser (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice) capped the scoring with a single through the right side to score
Ian Nguyen (Anoka, Minn./Coons Rapids).
The Miners scored twice in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Doug Wood and on a fielder's choice by Braden Mahurin.
The Flyers added three more in the ninth as Alt drove in two with a single up the middle and Keaty walked with the bases loaded to drive in Barry with the final run.
Lewis outhit S&T 13-6 in the contest and was led by Fox, Preusser and Barry with three hits apiece. Fox, Alt and Keaty combined to drive in nine runs in the contest.
Michael Sclafani (Oak Brook, Ill./Montini Catholic) picked up his first win of the season allowing a run on four hits with five strikeouts against three walks to improve to 1-4 on the season.
Henry Schuler (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic),
Kyle Hussey (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) and
Kurt Dankovich (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence) covered the final four innings allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits.
The Flyers and Miners continue their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader at the Ballpark at S&T. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
