Flyers Rally For Split With Miners

ROLLA, Mo. – Lewis University's baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader against Missouri S&T at The Ballpark at S&T in Rolla, Mo. Lewis dropped the opener 3-2 and rallied to win the nightcap 9-3. The Flyers are now 8-11-1 on the season, 4-3 in GLVC play while the Miners move to 14-10 on the season, and 3-4 in GLVC play.

Game 1 – Missouri S&T 3, Lewis 2

The Miners started game two of the series scoring all three of their runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. After two quick outs, the Miners strung together three consecutive hits which started with a two-out double by Doug Wood who later scored on a triple by Garrett Weiner. A two-run homerun by Brady Voss put the Miners up 3-0 after the first inning.

The Flyers answered back scoring a run in the second and third innings on solo homeruns. In the top of the second with two outs, Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) smashed a solo homerun to left field and David Ascencio (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) homered in the top of the third to left center to bring the Flyers within one.

Ascencio led Lewis with two hits, while Fox, Barry, Alt, and Keaty had a hit each.

Jake Karaba (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) (0-2) suffered the loss giving up three earned runs on six hits and a walk while striking out seven in 6.0 innings pitched. Cade Meier (3-1) picked up the win for the Miners giving up two earned runs on six hits while striking out four in 6.0 innings pitched.

Game 2 – Lewis 9, Missouri S&T 3

Lewis got on the board early scoring one run in the second inning and one in the third inning. In the top of the second, Davey Fitzpatrick (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) double down the left field line and scored on Jason Krol's (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) single to centerfield to give the Flyers an early 1-0 lead.

Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) led off the third inning with a single to left and Joe Preusser (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice) followed with a hit by pitch. After a Miners wild pitch, Ascencio hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Fox from third to give Lewis a 2-0 lead.

Missouri S&T answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth on two hits. Brady Voss doubled down left field line to score Garrett Weiner and a sacrifice fly later in the inning brought in Voss to tie the game. It's third run came on a double to center field by Tate Morrell scoring Braden Mahurin.

The Flyers tied the game in the fifth on a double to left field by Ascencio which scored Fox who led off with a walk.

Lewis exploded in the sixth scoring six times on one hit and three Miners errors. After Fitzpatrick walked and Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) reached on an error, Krol reached on a fielder's choice in which the pitcher threw the ball away at home plate allowing two runs to score. Later in the inning, Fox hit a two-run homerun to left field to increase the Flyer lead to 7-3. The final two runs in the inning for Lewis came on a fielding error by the left fielder which allowed Preusser, who walked, and Ian Nguyen (Anoka, Minn./Coons Rapids), who was hit by a pitch, to score on the play.

Fox and Ascencio combined for four Lewis' hits and RBIs in the nightcap with two apiece.

Jake Lotz (Palos Hills, Ill./St. Laurence) (2-1) picked up the win pitching in relief of starting pitcher Anthony Sorrentino (Burr Ridge, Ill./Lyons Township). Lotz allowed only three hits while striking out four in 3.0 innings pitched.

The Flyers wrap up their four-game series with the Miners tomorrow on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
