ROLLA, Mo. – Lewis University's baseball team completed its four-game weekend series at Missouri S&T with a 22-3 win on Sunday afternoon at the Ballpark at S&T in Rolla, Mo. The Flyers improve to 9-11-1, 5-2 GLVC while the Miners drop to 14-11, 3-5 GLVC.
The Flyers sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the first scoring four runs on three hits.
Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) walked and scored on
Joe Preusser's (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice) triple down the left field line and
Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) followed with a double to right field to score Preusser.
Ian Nguyen (Anoka, Minn./Coons Rapids) doubled down the left field line with the bases loaded to score Barry and Alt to take an early 4-0 lead.
The Miners got one back in the bottom of the third after a walk by Aaron Berkhoff and a single by Chase Burgess put runners on the corners. Berkhoff scored on a fielding error by Fox to pull S&T within three.
Lewis exploded for 18 more runs scoring in every inning after the third. The Flyers scored seven runs in fourth highlighted by
Davey Fitzpatrick's (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) fielder's choice scoring
David Ascencio (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) who reached on an error by the second baseman.
Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) singled to left field to score Barry who reached on a fielder's choice.
Angelo Cantelo (Blue Island, Ill./Marian Catholic) followed with a triple down the left field line scoring both Alt and Fitzpatrick.
The Flyers added two in the fifth, seven in the sixth, and two more in the seventh. The three innings were highlighted by doubles from
Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin), Barry, and
Dalton Meredith (Debary, Fla./University) accounting for five of the runs. A pinch-hit single in the top of the seventh by
Tyler Macdougall (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) made the score 22-1 entering the bottom half of the seventh.
The Miners scored twice in the seventh on a single to right center to score Deoca and Hampton.
The Flyers out hit S&T 16 to 6 and were led by Alt with three while Preusser, Barry, and Keaty had two each. Seven different players had at least one hit in the contest. Barry drove in five runs while Nguyen drove in three followed by Fitzpatrick, Meredith, and Cantelo with two apiece.
Jonathon Hanscom (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) (2-2) earned the win allowing one run on four hits with strikeouts against one walk in six innings pitched.
Dru Jasnoch (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) pitched the final inning allowing two runs on two hits with a strikeout.
Lewis returns to the diamond on Tuesday (April 5) as it travels to Allendale, Mich., to take on Grand Valley State in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 12:05 p.m. (CDT).
