ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's lacrosse team defeated Missouri Western 11-9 on its Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers improve to 3-7, 1-2 GLVC while Griffons drop to 6-7, 0-3 GLVC.
Missouri Western got on the board first scoring 3:17 into the game on Tamrin Swann's unassisted goal.
Lewis dominated the rest of the opening period scoring the next four goals with two from
Paige Bracey (Apex, N.C./Apex) while
Jamie Rieger (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) and
Emily Meredith (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) had one each.
The Griffons cut the Flyer lead in half with a goal 1:36 into the second period. Lewis answered right back two minutes as Bracey completed the hat trick to make it 5-2. MWSU cut the Flyer lead to one at halftime with two goals in the final three minutes of the half.
Lewis regained its three-goal lead early in the third quarter with two goals 0:37 apart.
Meltonique Bowen (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Flanagan) worked her way through the defense to score in front of the net for her fourth of the season and shortly after Bowen set up
Alyssa Davidson (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) for her first goal of the season.
The Griffons scored the final goal of the period on a free position shot from Swann with 10:59 left in the frame.
Cici Roney (Arlington Heights, Ill./Saint Viator) gave the Flyers an 8-5 lead early in the final stanza but Missouri Western scored twice in the span of 2:07 to cut the lead to 8-7.
Lindsey Traub (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard High School) gave Lewis a two-goal cushion midway through the period. The Griffons made it 9-8 on Sam Pruitt's goal from Mikaela Ness with 4:28 to play.
The Flyers scored twice in 0:48 for two insurance goals to push its lead back to three. Meredith scored her second of the contest and
Carlie Serritella (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) sealed the win.
Missouri Western got the final goal 0:20 after Serritella's goal for the last one in the contest.
Lewis outshot the Griffons 33-27 in the contest including 22-21 in shots on goal. Bracey had a game-high three goals while Meredith added two.
Faith Engle (Marysville, OH/Marysville High School) made a season-high 12 saves to earn the win in goal.
Swann and Madison Brady led Missouri Western with two goals apiece.
The Flyers head to Quincy, Ill., this Thursday (April 14) to take on the Quincy Hawks at 3 p.m. at Quincy Stadium.
