ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's 67th ranked women's tennis team had its three-match winning streak snapped with a 4-2 loss to Maryville on Friday afternoon the Vaughn Athletic Center in Aurora, Ill. The Flyers drop to 12-5, 2-2 GLVC while the Saints improve to 9-4, 3-0 GLVC.
Maryville won the opening point of the match by winning two of the three doubles matches. The Saints number one team of Emily Orlove and Carolina Velazquez defeated Lewis' team of
Nefeli Zafeiri (Greece) and
Casey Smith (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) 6-3. Maryville clinched the doubles point getting a 7-6 (10-5) win from the team of Georgina Cupper and Victoria Lisson over
Anastasiya Salenko (Kyiv, Ukraine) and
Joie Reisch (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township).
Jovana Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) and
Grace Sueflohn (Delafield, Wis./KM Global Charter School) beat Maria Gouveia and Nicole Pafundi 7-6 (7-3) in the final doubles contest.
The Flyers won two of the first three singles matches to tie the match at two. Orlove defeated Zafeiri 6-3, 6-3 to give the Saints a 2-0 lead. Salenko got Lewis on the board with a 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 win over Cupper in the number one singles match. Smith followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Velazquez to square the match. Maryville won the final two matches with Pafundi beating Vujanic 6-0, 6-2 and Gouveia defeating
Sage Hills (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) 6-3, 6-4.
The Flyers host Lindenwood on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex on the Lewis University campus.
