ST. LOUIS – Carlie Serritella's (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) goal 1:22 into overtime gave Lewis University's women's lacrosse team a 10-9 victory at Maryville on Saturday morning at the Maryville Lacrosse Field in St. Louis. The Flyers improve to 4-8, 2-3 GLVC while the Saints fall to 4-6, 1-4 GLVC.
Lewis jumped out to a 3-1 lead on goals from
Meltonique Bowen (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Flanagan),
Jamie Rieger (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) and
Paige Bracey (Apex, N.C./Apex) less than five minutes into the contest. Maryville scored twice in the span of 3:09 later in the quarter to even the score at three heading into the second period.
The Flyers regained the lead on a goal from
Lindsey Traub (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard High School) but the Saints scored the next two goals to take their first lead of the contest on Katie Von Mecklenburg's goal with 10:04 left in the stanza. Lewis came right back scoring twice in the span of 1:56 to take a 6-5 lead into the break. Traub tied it with 5:53 left in the quarter and Bracey made it 6-5 with 3:57 remaining in the period.
The Flyers scored the first two goals of the third quarter to extend their lead to three as Serritella and
Alyssa Davidson (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) scored 0:53 apart to make it 8-5. Maryville cut Lewis' lead to 8-6 by the end of the frame on Jolie Skyler's unassisted goal.
The Saints retook the lead scoring the first three goals of the final period with Jessie Hynes scoring twice and Ronnie Skorcz added the third.
Davidson tied the game with 2:51 to go on a free position attempt after a foul in the critical scoring area.
The Flyers had a chance to win the game a minute later but Rieger's shot was saved by Jo Miles.
Maryville had three chances in the final 0:30 seconds to win the game but
Brigid Fornek (Lawrenceville, Ga./Grayson) stopped all three chances to force the extra frame.
Lewis dominated the overtime period as the Saints never got a chance. Rieger won the draw control to start the period and then a foul in the critical scoring area set up a free position attempt for Serritella and her attempt was successful to end the game.
Serritella, Bracey, Davidson and Traub had two goals apiece in the contest while Rieger and Bowen added one each. Bowen won four draw controls, five players had two caused turnovers each and Fornek made 12 saves and scooped up seven ground balls to earn her second win of the season.
The Flyers outshot Maryville 32-26 in the contest including 26-21 in shots on goal.
Hynes led the Saints with three goals scored while Miles made 16 saves in goal.
Lewis concludes its three-game road trip next Friday as they travel to Lebanon, Ill., to take on McKendree at 7 p.m.
