GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Lewis University women's tennis team fell to Grand Valley State 6-1 Wednesday (April 20) in a nonconference match at Premier Athletic and Tennis Club. The Flyers are now 13-6 overall, while the Lakers are 12-5.
The No. 1 doubles team of
Nefeli Zafeiri (Greece) and
Casey Smith (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) won 6-3 over Marily Canellopoulos and Marija Leko. However, the Flyers fell at the other two spots to lose the point.
Anastasiya Salenko (Kyiv, Ukraine) and
Joie Reisch (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township) lost 6-4 at No. 2 to Vasileia Griva and Vera Griva and
Jovana Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) and
Grace Sueflohn (Delafield, Wis./KM Global Charter School) lost to Estefania Hernandez and Taylor Barrett 6-2 at No. 3.
Smith got the win at No. 3 singles for the Flyers, defeating Vasileia Griva 6-7, 6-3, 6-2. Salenko fell at No. 1 singles to Griva Vera 6-0, 6-1, Zafeiri fell to Leko 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2, Vujanic lost to Hernandez 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4, Reisch fell to Barrett 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 and
Sage Hills (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) lost to Canellopoulos 7-6, 6-3 at No. 6.
Lewis finishes up its regular season Friday (April 22) wih a Great Lakes Valley Conference match against Southern Indiana. Match time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Vaughn Athletic Center in Aurora.
