Lewis Men’s Lacrosse Clinches Spot In GLVC Tournament With 13-9 Win Over Maryville

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's lacrosse team clinched its first trip to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament with a 13-9 win over Maryville on Saturday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers improve to 9-5, 3-3 GLVC while the Saints finish their season with a record of 9-5, 2-4 GLVC.

Lewis got off to a quick start scoring 0:32 into the game on Jack Stone's (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) unassisted goal. The Flyers scored two minutes as Baden Boyenko (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph) scored off a pass from Stone for his 29th goal of the season.

Maryville cut Lewis' lead in half 1:23 later as Connor Eskridge scored from Ethan Olson.

The Flyers dominated the remainder of the period scoring three more goals. Drew Kask (Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) made it 3-1 at the 10:08 mark, then Drew Andre (Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada/Pitt Meadows Secondary School) scored 1:19 later to make it 4-1. Evan Clement (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) added the final goal of the quarter with 6:11 left in the stanza to give Lewis a 5-1 lead at the end of the opening frame.

Lewis extended its lead to five 2:01 into the second stanza as Stone scored his second of the contest with an assist from Boyenko.

The Saints scored the next two goals to trim the Flyer lead to three but Lewis countered with three straight goal to take its largest lead of the contest at 9-3. Kevin Blaz (McHenry, Ill./Marian Central Catholic), Clement and Stone each scored during that run.

Tyler Wenck scored his first goal of the contest with 2:17 left in the half to cut the lead to five but Stone scored his third goal of the half 1:19 to give the Flyers a 10-4 lead at the half.

Each team scored a goal in the third quarter. Joel Lucas made it 10-5 with his ninth goal of the year from Wenck with 5:43 left in the stanza but Boyenko countered with his second of the contest to give Lewis its six-goal lead back heading into the final quarter.

Maryville dominated the first half of the final stanza scoring three times to cut Lewis' lead to 11-8 with 11:12 remaining.

Boyenko scored his third goal of the contest with 4:14 left to give the Flyers a four-goal cushion.

Reid Usrey brought the Saints back to within three with a goal at the 1:57 mark but the Flyers scored right off the ensuing face-off as Dominic Bravata (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Clement to seal the victory.

Lewis outshot Maryville 40-34 in the contest including 22-21 in shots on goal. Stone scored a game-high four goals and added an assist to finish with five points. Boyenko scored three goals and added an assist for four points. Clement finished with two goals. Soren Thrawl (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) caused two turnovers, Domenic Tarello (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) scooped up six ground balls and was 13-for-17 in the face-off circle. Riah Rathe (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) made 12 saves in goal to earn his ninth win of the season.

The Flyers will take on top seeded Indianapolis in the semifinal round of the GLVC Tournament on Friday (April 29) at 4 p.m. (CDT) at Key Stadium in Indianapolis.
