Flyers Rally In Nightcap To Complete Four-Game Sweep Of Southern Indiana

Lewis won the first game 15-3 on Sunday.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Lewis University's baseball team swept both games of its doubleheader with Southern Indiana on Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field in Evansville, Ind. The Flyers improve to 15-20-1 overall, 10-10 GLVC, while USI falls to 15-25 overall, 4-12 GLVC. It was Lewis' first sweep of the season series against Southern Indiana since 1997.
 
Game 1 – Lewis 15 Southern Indiana 3
 
The Flyers exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second on four hits. David Ascencio (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) led off with a walk followed by a single by Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) and a walk by Julian Everett (Frankfort, Ill/Lincoln Way East) to load the bases. Cherokee LeBeau drove in the first two runs with a single to left scoring Alt and Ascencio. Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) doubled down the right field line to make it 4-0 and Joe Preusser's (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice) two-out double to right center increased the lead to 5-0.
 
Lewis scored five more in the third inning. Everett, Preusser and Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) each had RBI singles while Fox drove in one with a double to make it 10-0. The Flyers scored five more in the fifth on five hits. Preusser, Barry, Alt each had RBI singles while Everett drove in two with a single up the middle.
 
The Screaming Eagles scored three runs in the top of the sixth on Ethan Hunter's triple down the left field line and McNew's sacrifice fly to right field made it 15-3.
 
The Flyers outhit the Screaming Eagles 18-2 and were led by Fox with four while Alt and Preusser had three each, and Everett, LeBeau, and Keaty with two each. Anthony Sorrentio (1-1) picked up his first collegiate win giving up three runs on just two hits with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched. Garret Welch (2-4) suffered the loss pitching 2.2 innings giving up nine runs on nine hits and four walks.
 
Game 2 – Lewis 8 Southern Indiana 5
 
USI jumped out to an early 2-0 in the second inning on two hits. Tachioka singled to left field scoring Archuleta who reached via a walk and Hunter drove in the Screaming Eagles second run on a single to left field scoring Kahre.
 
Lewis tied the game with two of its own in the third inning on three hits. Back-to-back doubles by Fox and Preusser cut the USI lead in half and then Barry tied it with an RBI single through the right side to drive in Preusser.
 
USI retook the lead in the seventh scoring three runs on just one hit in the inning. Tachioka scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded followed by bases loaded walks to Boese and Archuleta to make it 5-2.
 
The Flyers rallied in their half of the seventh scoring six runs on five hits and an error. Barry's sacrifice fly to left field scored Fox who reached on a single. Alt's RBI single through the left side and Angelo Cantelo's (Blue Island, Ill./Marian Catholic) double down the left field line tied the game at 5-5. Alt scored on a wild pitch to give Lewis a 6-5 lead and LeBeau reached on a throwing error by the second baseman allowing Evertt and Cantelo to score some insurance runs.
 
Kyle Hussey (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) (1-1) picked up the win pitching a third of an inning give up no runs or hits. Matt Helwig (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) picked up his third save pitching the final two innings giving up one hit while recording six strikeouts. Cory Anderson (0-1) took the loss for USI giving up two runs on two hits and a walk.
 
Lewis returns to the diamond on Wednesday as they take on Parkside in a single 9-inning game scheduled for 1 p.m. in Kenosha, Wis.
