KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Lewis University's baseball team had its five-game winning streak snapped with a 13-6 loss to Truman State on Friday afternoon in Kirksville, Mo. The Flyers fall to 15-21-1, 10-11 GLVC while the Bulldogs improve to 17-26, 7-10 GLVC.
Lewis struck first in the top of the first scoring one run on one hit.
Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) led off with a double and advanced to third on
Joe Preusser's (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice) fly out to center field. Fox scored on
Kevin Barry's (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) groundout to second.
The Bulldogs answered back in the bottom of the second scoring three runs on five hits. Three straight singles to lead off the inning loaded the bases for Dylan Thompson who singled to right field to even the score. Sam Smith followed with a two-run double to right center scoring Thompson and Dakota Spice to make it 3-1.
Truman added to its lead scoring one in the third on Holden Missey's solo home run to right center and two more in the bottom of the fifth on Missey's two-run homer to right field to make the score 6-1.
The Flyers chipped away at the lead in the sixth scoring three runs on five hits. Preusser got the rally started with a home run to right field followed by a double from Barry and an RBI single from
David Ascencio (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) to make the score 6-3. Back-to-back singles from
Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) and
Jason Krol (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) loaded the bases and Ascencio scored on a wild pitch to make it two-run contest.
The Bulldogs extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth with two runs. Thompson hit a solo home run to right center and Brennan Perk's RBI double to left scored Luke Turner to make it 8-4.
Truman State exploded for four runs in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles from Spice and Smith and RBI doubles from Tal Dean and Turner making it 12-4.
Lewis rallied for two in the eighth scoring on Cherokee LeBeau's sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Ascencio who led off with a single. Alt reached on a single up the middle and scored on a wild pitch making it 12-6.
Truman State added one in the bottom of the eighth on Missey's third homerun of the game for the final margin
Lewis had 11 hits in the contest and were led by Ascencio, Alt and Krol with two hits apiece.
Michael Sclafani (Oak Brook, Ill./Montini Catholic) (2-6) took the loss for the Flyers allowing six runs on ten hits and two walks while striking out five in 4.1 innings pitched. Zachry Schneider (4-3) earned the win allowing four runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out six in 7.0 innings pitched.
The two teams continue their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader in Kirksville beginning at 1 p.m.
