ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's lacrosse team overcame an early three-goal deficit but ultimately fell to ninth ranked Lindenwood 14-10 on Saturday afternoon at Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo. The Flyers fall to 7-5, 2-2 GLVC while the Lions improve to 9-2, 4-0 GLVC.
Lindenwood scored the first three goals of the contest to take the early lead but Lewis came back with two goals in the final five minutes of the stanza to cut the Lion lead to one by the end of the quarter.
Lindenwood opened the scoring in the second period with a goal on the extra minute opportunity but the Flyers answered with back-to-back goals to even things at 4-4. The Lions took a 5-4 lead into the break as Nolan Corker scored with 1:24 remaining in the half.
Lewis dominated the first 10 minutes of the third quarter scoring five straight goals to take a 9-5 lead.
Baden Boyenko (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph) scored three of those goals while
Hunter Loprino (Woodstock, Ill./St. Viator) and
Drew Kask (Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) added one each.
Lindenwood scored the final two goals of the period to cut the Flyer lead in half heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
The Flyers scored 1:15 in the final stanza to extend its lead to 10-7 on
Evan Clement's (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) third goal of the contest.
The Lions dominated the rest of the way outscoring Lewis 7-0 over the final 12:30 of the contest. Peter Covington and Cam Smith scored twice in that run while Corker, Mason Homer and Adrian Thompson added one each.
The Flyers recorded 29 shots in the contest including 18 on goal and were led by Boyenko with four goals while Clement added three.
Tyler Shively-Ablang (Las Vegas, Nev./Northwest Career and Technical School),
Cole Roth (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) and
Jack Stone (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) caused two turnovers apiece and
Peter Carlson (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) scooped up three ground balls.
Lindenwood had 53 shots in the game with 25 on goal. Covington had four goals while Corker finished with three. Jack Huntington caused three turnovers and Colin Hunt scooped up 10 ground balls.
Lewis returns to action next Saturday as it travels to Quincy, Ill., to take on Quincy at 7 p.m. at Quincy Stadium.
