ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Lewis University's baseball team dropped its opening game in the GLVC Baseball Tournament to Maryville 3-1 on Thursday afternoon at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo. The Flyers fall to 19-24-1 while the Saints improve to 32-18.
Lewis, seeded third in the GLVC's Blue Division, scored the game's first run in the third inning.
Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on fielder's choice.
Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) drove him in with a two out single to left center.
The Flyers had a chance to extend their lead in the fifth with runners at second and third and one out but a foul out and a fly out to center ended the threat.
Maryville, seeded second in the GLVC's Green Division, took the lead in the home half of the fifth scoring three runs on four hits. Joey Polak and Elias Stevens hit back-to-back home runs with one out in the inning. After a pitching change, Alex Hoff tripled to right center and scored on Michael Gould's single to center.
Lewis had the tying runs in scoring position in the ninth but Alt grounded out sharply to short to end the game.
The Flyers had eight hits in the contest with
Joe Preusser (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice) and
Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) recording two hits apiece.
Michael Sclafani (Oak Brook, Ill./Montini Catholic) took the loss allowing two runs on seven hits with a strikeout in 4.1 innings pitched.
Lewis will take on William Jewell in an elimination game on Friday morning at 9 a.m. at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
