On August 23, the NCAA Division II Committee on Infractions released its findings on an infractions case involving the former coach and the Lewis University Women's and Men's Tennis programs between November 2018-August 2020.
On numerous occasions the former head coach provided extra benefits to Lewis's student athletes, including impermissible housing arrangements, impermissible use of motor vehicles and impermissible food and lodging, while employed as head coach.
Among the penalties and corrective measures prescribed by the committee were:
- Three years of probation (August 23, 2022 - August 22, 2025). This penalty does not preclude or ban any sport programs, including the tennis program from competing in the 2022-23 postseason, and thereafter.
- $5,000 fine.
- Vacate of all records involving student-athletes that received any benefits.
- A five-year "show cause" order from August 23, 2022, through August 22, 2027 against the former head coach, whose employment with Lewis University ended in 2020.
"Lewis University remains committed to following all NCAA rules and regulations. We continually work to ensure our coaches and student-athletes understand and abide by them,"
Dr. John Planek, Director of Lewis University Athletics, commented.
Current Head Coach
Raquel Vescovi is beginning her third season directing the Lewis tennis programs. Last season, she led the Flyer's men's teams to the NCAA Regional Championships. In addition, four of Lewis men's tennis student-athletes and five women were named Division II Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) scholar athletes and the team also earned All-Academic Team status. To earn the award, athletes had to earn 3.5 GPAs in the classroom, while teams had to have a GPA of 3.2 or above.
