GREENWOOD, Ind. -- The Lewis University men's tennis team had individuals compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Tournament (ITA) hosted by University of Indianapolis which concluded Monday (Sept. 19).
Omer Gorgun (Kocaeli, Turkey/South Carolina State) and Zachary Matuszak advanced to the quarterfinals in Flight B after defeating Drury's Casper Otten and Claudio Vertiz Olivares, 8-4. The duo also defeated Rockhurst's Juan Felipe Castellanos and Victor Agustin Cortes Flores, 8-4. In quarterfinals, Gorgun and Matuszak's run came to an end after losing to Findlay's Octavio Carrasco and Mark Ivanov, 9-7.
Boris Redkow (Hamburg, Germany/Saint Mary College) and
Tatenda Mutetwa (Harare, Zimbabwe) made it to the Round of 16 in Flight A after defeating Findlay's Luigi Bove and Dallas Ramsey, 9-7. The duo ended up losing to Indianapolis's Louis Picaud and Mathieu Derache, 8-5.
Oliwer Wierzbicki (Szczecin, Poland/Tennessee State) and
Grant Miller (Charlestown, Ind./Silver Creek) lost in the quarterfinals in Flight C, 8-5, to Lake Superior's Logan Brown and Xavier Vincent Navarro.
Gorgun made to the quarterfinals in Flight A after defeating Northwood's Leon Grundstroem, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 and Purdue Northwest's Luca Kirchhoff, 6-2, 6-1, before dropping his match against Tom Niklas Zeuch of University of Indianapolis, 6-2, 6-1.
Matuszak made it to the Round of 32 after defeating Brendan Everhart of Quincy in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1 before falling to Mario Aleksic of Maryville in Flight A, 6-3, 6-4.
Miller suffered a setback in the round of 32 against Iago Alcover of Rockhurst in Flight C, 6-1, 1-6, 11-9.
Mutetwa lost to Daniel Cardy of Davenport in the round of 32 in Flight B, 6-4, 7-6, (7-5)
Wierzbicki dropped his match to Leon Sell of Michigan Tech in the round of 32 also in Flight B, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
Matuszak made it to the Round of 32 after defeating Brendan Everhart of Quincy in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1 before falling to Mario Aleksic of Maryville in Flight A, 6-3, 6-4.
Reckow lost his match in the Round of 32 to Tiffin's Ruben Fonga, 6-1, 6-4.
