JOLIET, Ill. -- The Lewis University baseball team opened up their 2023 season with a win against St. Francis (Ill.), 13-8, at Duly Health and Care Field Tuesday.

SUMMARY
Michael Alt (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) doubled to start the contest in the top of the first inning.
Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) came up next and hit a two-run bomb to left to make it 2-0 in the first inning.
A pair of walks drawn by
Tony Fleischauer (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and
George Bilecki (Chicago, Ill./Marist) (Chicago, Ill./Marist) set up a sacrifice fly by Alt to make it 3-0 in the second inning.
The Fighting Saints responded with three in the bottom of the third to tie the contest then took a 4-3 lead the following inning.
Lewis regained the lead in the fifth inning after getting a pair of runs including a RBI single by
Chris McDevitt (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) which score Josh Blazevich.
USF would respond in the bottom half of the fifth with three runs to grab a 7-5 lead.
George Bilecki (Chicago, Ill./Marist) (Chicago, Ill./Marist) got one back the next inning and hitting a one over the right field wall.
Jackson Brown (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning which put him in line for the win after the Flyers scored four in the eighth. Fox hit a sacrifice fly to tie it which scored Bilecki from third.
Moments later, Lewis grabbed a 8-7 lead after Blazevich hit an RBI single to left which scored
Cain Headrick (Custer Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) from third. The next batter,
Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) ripped a 2-run triple right center to extend the Lewis lead out to 10-7.
Lewis extended their lead with three in the ninth for insurance runs. Headrick made it 11-7 after hitting a RBI double to right which scored
Tony Fleischauer (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic).
Fox made it 13-7 after the junior hit a 2-run double, scoring Alt and Headrick. USF tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth after getting one back in the bottom of the ninth but
Matt Helwig (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) came on in relief and closed the door.

Lewis will be back in action Thursday, February 23-Friday, February 24 as the Flyers travel to Nashville, Tenn. to take on Trevecca Nazarene for a 3-game series.
