Lewis Softball Sweeps First Two Games of Lewis Dome Invite Thursday

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Lewis University softball team swept their first two games of the Lewis Invite Thursday as the Flyers defeated Saginaw Valley State, 5-4, in 10 innings then shutout Wayne State, 2-0 at The Dome at Parkway Bank Sports Complex. 

GAME 1: Lewis 5, Saginaw Valley State 4 (10 innings)

SUMMARY
Saginaw Valley struck first in the top of the third inning to make it 1-0. 

The Cardinals doubled their lead in the top of the sixth inning after a Flyers miscue which made it 2-0. 

Lewis was able to respond and tie the contest up at 2-all after capitalizing on the Cardinals miscues this time with Jalyn Powell (Tolono, IL/Unity) and Delaney Garden (Carpentersville, IL/Harry D. Jacobs High School) scoring. 

The game went extra innings with both teams deadlocked at 2 a piece. SVSU took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth before Garden tied it up to center in the bottom half with an RBI single which scored Carrie Anderson (Roscoe, IL/Hononegah Community)

Saginaw Valley regained the lead in the top of the ninth inning but Lewis responded right away in the bottom half after Kristen Graham (Mapleton, IL/Illini Bluffs High School) ripped an RBI single to left which scored Maggie Joutras (Shorewood, IL/Providence Catholic High School)

Garden got out of a huge jam in the top of the 10th inning by not allowing the Cardinals to score. Powell came through in the clutch in the bottom half with an RBI single to left which scored Meghan Bontrager (Milford, IN/Northridge) to give the Flyers a 5-4 win. 

Garden pitched a complete game, throwing all 10 innings, scattering nine hits, allowing four runs (none earned), walking none and striking out six.

SUMMARY
Wayne State had a scoring chance in the top of the second inning after having two on and only one out but Lewis starting pitcher Payton Wuske (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln-Way East) was able to record back-to-back strikeouts to escape the jam.

Lewis struck first in the bottom of the third inning as Graham recorded a sacrifice fly to right which scored Gabi Nilles (North Aurora, IL/West Aurora) from third to make it 1-0 Flyers. 

Grace Erickson (New Lenox, IL/Lincoln-Way Central) doubled the lead in the bottom of the sixth for an insurance run for the Flyers which scored Graham. 

Wuske completed the complete game shutout for her first victory of the season after going all seven innings, scattering four hits, walking two and striking out three.

Lewis will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 25 as the Flyers host Ursuline College at 11 a.m. CT then Minnesota Duluth at 1:30 p.m. CT.
