Lewis Women’s Basketball Picks Up Eighth Straight Win With Victory Over Missouri S&T

Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – The Lewis University women's basketball team won their eighth straight game as the Flyers defeated Missouri S&T, 70-60, on Thursday, February 23. Kathryn Schmidt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central) matched her season-high of 14 rebounds in the win.

SUMMARY
Missouri S&T jumped out to a 22-12 lead in the first quarter after Eryn Puett made a pair of free throws. Lewis' Schmidt was able to cut the deficit to single digits after a jumper with less than two minutes to go in the opening quarter.
 
The Miners started the second quarter making its first three shots and earned its largest lead of the game of 11 points with 8:44 left in the first half. The Flyers' Hart was able to make a point blank layup in the closing moments of the second but Lewis still trailed by eight.
 
In the first half, Lewis struggled, shooting 13-of-37 (35 percent) from the field and missing all 11 of its 3-point attempts. As for Missouri S&T, as the Miners shot nearly 50 percent from three making five of its 11 attempts, while shooting 44.8 percent (13-for-29) from the field.
 
Badali, Gugliuzza and Schmidt all made layups in the first three minutes of the second half to help cut the Miners lead down to four. After both teams went scoreless for nearly two minutes, Hart broke the cold streak with a 3-pointer and brought the Flyers within one point.
 
The Lewis run continued with a pair of Gugliuzza free throws that gave Lewis its first lead of the evening. Gugliuzza also made a put back layup as the third quarter closed, giving the Flyers a 46-44 lead after three.
 
In the fourth quarter, Lewis shot 53.3 percent from the field and made all six of its free throws to close out the Miners and earn its eighth straight win. The Flyers were able to come out victorious and comeback from trailing by 11 points in a game in which they shot 15.8 percent (3-for-19) from behind the arc. Biggest contributors to the win for Lewis was 40 points scored in the paint while only committing five turnovers.
