Softball Splits First Day of MSU Invitational Friday

MANKATO, Minn. -- The Lewis University softball team dropped their first game to Missouri Western, 4-3, before defeating Minnesota State-Mankato, 6-2, at the Maverick All-Sports Dome Friday.

GAME 2 SUMMARY
Lewis was able to strike first in the top of the first inning after Sara Serena (Kankakee, IL/Kankakee) ripped an RBI single which scored Delaney Garden (Carpentersville, IL/Harry D. Jacobs High School) to make it 1-0. The Flyers extended their lead out to 4-0 after a three-run top of the third.

Jalyn Powell (Tolono, IL/Unity) recorded an RBI single which scored Garden from third. Serena had the biggest it of the game as the fifth year took the first pitch and put it over the left field wall to make it 4-0.

The Mavericks got one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning after a sacrifice fly. The Flyers extended their lead out to 6-1 in the top of the seventh inning after Powell hit one over the left center field.

Minnesota State looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Mavericks were only able to get one in their half inning as the Flyers closed the door and won 6-2.

Allie Wondrasek (New Lenox, IL/Lincoln-Way West High School) recorded the complete game victory, pitching all seven frames, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned), walking three and striking out six for her first win of the season.

GAME 1 SUMMARY
Powell started the scoring off for the Flyers after an RBI single drove home Garden to make it 1-0 in the opening frame.

Missouri Western responded in the top half of the next inning with three runs off starting pitcher Peyton Wuske to make it 3-1 Griffons in the second. Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the third and fourth frame.

Lewis responded in the fifth inning after Kenzie Murdock (New Lenox, IL/Lincoln-Way Central High School) ripped a two-run double to right field which scored Kristen Graham (Mapleton, IL/Illini Bluffs High School) and Garden to make it 3-3. MWU had a chance to take the lead in the top of the sixth inning but relief pitcher Serena escaped the jam.

The Flyers had a prime chance to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning after Powell and Calderon walked to have two on and nobody out. Lewis was unable to capitalize after recording back-to-back outs after having runners at third and second.

Missouri Western was able to cash in on their chance with runners on scoring position in the top of the seventh inning to grab a 4-3 lead. Lewis was unable to come back in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Griffons closed the door.

Lewis will be back in action Saturday, February 4 as the Flyers take on Concordia-St. Paul at 9 a.m. then take on Minnesota Duluth starting at around 11:30 a.m. CT.
