Lewis Men's Volleyball Holds On To Defeat Erskine in Five Sets Friday

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- The Lewis University men's volleyball team was up two sets before Erskine fought back and won the next two before the Flyers won the fifth and the match 3-2 Friday (March 10) at Neil Carey Arena.

SET BREAKDOWN
FIRST SET: Lewis 25, Erskine 20
  • Both teams scored four points each to start the opening set before Erskine went on a 6-0 run.
  • Lewis bounced back and got six unanswered of their own capped off by a block from Kauling and Simpson it tie at 10-10.
  • The match went back-and-forth for the next 12 points, which tied it at 16-16.
  • Davis picked up a big service ace, which gave Lewis a 19-16 lead. 
  • The Flyers won the first set after Piotr Wymoczyl (Arlington Heights, IL/Buffalo Grove HS) recorded a kill. 
SECOND SET: Lewis 25, Erskine 23
  • The second set went back-and-forth with both teams scoring nine points.
  • The Flying Feet went on a 5-1 run to pull ahead 14-10. 
  • Lewis responded with a 7-1 run capped off by a service ace by Drolsum for a 17-15 lead.
  • Erskine rallied once more to take a 20-19 lead before Lewis stormed back and won the set 25-23.
THIRD SET: Erskine 31, Lewis 29 
  • The third set like the other two started off back-and-forth before Erskine grabbed a 16-13 lead.
  • The Flying Fleet held onto their lead for most of the set before Drolsum tied it at 24-24 with a kill. 
  • Both teams each scored five points to make it 29-29 then Erskine scored the last two points to take the set.
FOURTH SET: Erskine 25, Lewis 23
  • Erskine jumped out to an early 6-4 lead before Lewis responded with a kill by Simpson, which gave the Flyers a 11-10 advantage. 
  • Lewis would eventually stretch their lead to 20-17 after a kill by Drolsum. 
  • The Flying Fleet did not give up as Erskine went on a 7-1 scoring run to go up 24-21.
  • Erskine won the set 25-23 to force a winner take all fifth set. 
FIFTH SET: Lewis 15, Erskine 7
  • Lewis jumped out to an early 11-2 lead in the fifth set. 
  • Davis recorded three straight kills, Antonio Elias-Rodriguez (Naranjito, Puerto Rico/Colegio Sagrada Familia) and Drolsum recorded kills and Kauling had a service ace. 
  • Erskine looked to rally back in the set but Lewis was able to hold them off for the victory. 
FINAL SCORE: Lewis 3, Erskine 2

Lewis will be back in action and resume Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play Saturday, March 18 as the Flyers host McKendree inside Neil Carey Arena starting at 5 p.m.
