Flyers' Rally Comes Up Short In 8-6 Loss To Grand Valley State Monday

AUBURNDALE, Fla - The Lewis University baseball team scored for runs in the seventh inning on an Angelo Cantelo (Blue Island, Ill./Marian Catholic) grand slam, but it wasn't enough as the Flyers fell to Grand Valley State 8-6 Monday (March 6) at Lake Myrtle Park.

TEAM RECORDS
Lewis 4-5 | Grand Valley 2-3

SUMMARY
The Lakers scored one run in the bottom of the third and four more runs in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. Lewis got on the board with two runs in the fifth. Michael Alt (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) singled to score Jack Blazevich (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) in an unearned run and Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) added a single to score Julian Everett (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East).

Grand Valley put up two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, with the second run scoring on a bases loaded walk.

Lewis responded with four runs in the top of the seventh to make it a 7-6 game as Cantelo hit a grand slam, scoring Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin), Fox and Cain Headrick (Custer Park, Ill./Providence Catholic).

The Lakers added a run in the bottom of the seventh, but it could have been worse as a second run was thrown out at the plate by Everett.

Lewis went down in order in the eighth. It got the tying run up in the ninth after Cantelo was hit by a pitch with one out, but the final two batters struck out.

Colby Phipps (1-0) picked up the win for Grand Valley, allowing five hits and one earned run in five innings. Shane Gorman (Orland Park, Ill./Br. Rice) (0-2) suffered the loss for the Flyers, giving up five runs and four hits in 3.2 innings. Matt Piento (Indian Head Park, Ill./Lyons) and Ray Cantelo (Blue Island, Ill./Marian Catholic) each picked up a scoreless inning in relief. Fox and Blazevich had two hits each to pace the offense, while Cantelo posted four RBI, all coming from his home run.
